Heard on TV from the commentor YC Ma that the average of the Taipei spinners in the Grand slam are not that bad, just that others have improved much more, whereas Taipei standard more or less stay the same. But as I see our Jennifer Tan and Jesmine Ho also did not qualify in the q-final, perhaps the lanes did favour the hook, since it is accepted that when hook under favourable conditions strikes more often than spin.Originally posted by Ian:u wun see much spinners reaching the quaters onwards unless the venue is in taipei or hongkong. thats wat i gathered so far from the last few legs i watched.
That could be the case this year. But last year? Remember last year when Remy play against Wang-Yu-Jen (Ren) in the final. Wang was kind of lucky to get a 9 baggers starting from the fouth frame. I thought Wang would be automatically qualified this year since he is the defending champion (2 yrs ago and last year). How do we explain that? What type of oiling will be the politically correct one to apply?Originally posted by harmzuay:That's not surprising. Singapore, like most other countries in the region, favour heavy ball bowlers. And as such, the conditions laid down will be designed to "help" them score better than the spinners would. That's why when you watch the taiwanese leg of the ABT, there are practically no heavy ball bowlers.
Of course, oiling is only a reason. There are many more, such as the local pool having more bowlers than the overseas pool. But oiling is one way to *discretely* discriminate against some bowlers. The pattern can even be designed to favour down-and-in lines versus a wider, sweeping line to the pocket.
At the end of the day, bowling is still a sport. And as all sports, entail a certain political nature to it.
Goran was out already right? I thought I saw him closing his DNS account last month in a DBS bank?Originally posted by harmzuay:We are Singapore. In the eyes of STBC, a politically correct oiling means one for heavy ball bowlers. Especially when Goran favours them too. Every country conditions their lanes for their bowlers.
