came across this forum when I was random clicking the web. No I know there are a lot of expert bowlers here.
I have one question, how do you all hit your pin 10s? I'm right handed and bowls hook style.

pin 10.....for me i use house ball and roll backup. works for me though
on a serious note, pin 10 sparing is more on mental rather than practise. often we are worried of "lonkang". get rid of that sydrome and yr chance of success will increase a lot more.Right from the gutter, there are abt 3 boards which pin 10 is placed there. so if yr ball overhook a little say another 3 boards, chances are u will hit the pin 10 on the right side of the ball.

usually will stand on the 35th to 40th board region, depending on lane conditions, and targeting the 20th board,
btw, i'm a low track player and my ball dun really hook much,

ooh, thanx. I usually stand abt 40th aiming at 3rd arrow. Ball should skip till near the qutter then hook back knocking down pin 10. However, I don't have much confidence. The ball sometimes will overhook, or drop into the gutter.
If I invest in a plastic ball to roll at pin 10, will it be better if I roll it cross-lane aka, jae's method which he mentioned, or if I roll it parallel along the gutter, aka board 5 to 1st arrow to pin 10? In mathematics, the error cause by a small degree off in direction is more prounce if the distance to objective is larger. So the distance from foul-line to pin 10 is longer if I roll the plastic ball coss-lane. This increase the chances of error, if I were to miss by a small degree of direction. So is this method (cross-lane) recommended? I had heard that a lot of bowlers roll crosslane to knock pins at the right side. -

that's very good. You're using angles to work that out. But don't forget that playing up the channel means you would have the entire right area of the ball path unavailable. So, you actually have half the room for error as a cross-lane shot, because you can hit both the left, centre or right of the pin 10. -
Technically, going cross lane is going the longer distance, but it shouldn't matter. In my opinion, sparing the 10 should involve as little hook as possible. It's just one pin, so why do you bother to hook it? It's common to see bowlers miss the 10 to the left because of that.
I understand why righties hook their spare shots to take out pins situated further on the left, it's easier to adjust from the first shot, i do that too. But to hook it at the 10...... that's just playing with fire man... I mean, sure, it looks more impressive when you spare it with your regular revs, but can you do it every single time without hitting the gutter? Forget the flair, I still prefer a higher spare conversion average.
For the 10, i stand at 40th and throw at 20th(middle arrow). For the 6, shift right 3 boards and throw at the same place. Shift another 3 for the pin 3. -
I stand at 35th aiming for the 4th arrow for pin 10 using a polyster ball. As for pin 3, 6, 9, I used my 1st ball to take it. pin 6, 9 > stand at 25th aiming at 15th, but with less deg of axis rotation.

opoos! sorry, I stand at 30th aiming for 4th arrow. btw, my favourite arrow to 1-3 is 2rd, then 3rd, then 7th board, then 13th board...if all else fails, ....actually had never encountered "...if all else fails,..." cause usually can get ball to pocket by varying spd, revs, etc. But strike a not is another method altogether.

Work on the mental fear of pin 10, that's the key pt
It doesn't matter if u aim 3rd, 4th or 5th arrow.if u always fear sparing pin 10, u will never clear more than 50% of yr pin10 sparing practises.
I would suggest u go to the library and borrow a bowling book written by parker bohn. He has some good illustrations on corner sparing. Do chekc it out.I learn some good pts frm him -

As for me,
I don't change hand positions for my pin 10s. I just switch to plastic balls and increase my speed. I admit I am not consistent enough to switch hand positions like flattening it out and rolling straight up the back.
Stand on 35, and shoot at 20th board. More like in between 19 and 20, just grazing 20. Of course, since we are standing so far left, it is imperative for us to be slightly tilted right to properly face our target.
Works for me quite well. -

Learn SPINNER style for ur spares!!! Easy and zhun to spare single and spilts!! HAAHAA....
That's wat some of my friends who switch from spinner style to hook style are doing... they carry nice averages too... abot 180-190.... -
One should stick to one style when bowling. Don't use spin & hook in a same game. It'll do more harm than good

hey, i'bac again wif another question. How do you train to increase the revs of the ball I would say I have decent revs, hookable when the back is relatively dry. I am thinking of increasing the revs to play on heavier lane oil conditions. Any ways?

Revs.... hmmm and i want to cut down... well, revs is increased by 1) a cleaner thumb 2) better lifting 3) a faster turn at the right time basically,a good clean release.
this of course is dependent on how u release ur ball. wats ur track like? inverted? or normal? high track? or low?
for me, i break wrist more to get more revs. for a stroker style ( deduced from ur description of ur throw) the only way is a good timing and a good lift.some also do a slight elbow bend to get under the ball more to generate the revs. ie; shaun ng.

The majority of bowlers and coaches who have written about this say that revolutions are generated by the acceleration of the wrist through the ball during release. The more acceleration one has, the more revolutions one imparts to the ball.
This means that one has to have enough strength to do this, and note that this acceleration of the wrist is only applicable to the time from when the thumb exits and the fingers exit. Period.
That's the formula for generating revolutions. -
hmmm, would putting extra weight on the forearm area help? Like strapping mayb 2lb, hence totaling 17lbs on the bowling arm? (i.e. if ur ball is 15)

eh i doubt it... 1) read the above post.. only when the thumb EXITS, so extra weight is not = acceleration/ turn of wrist.
2) so heavy... backswing blur liao... might as well get a 16lb and bowl. will wear urself out if u are as weak as me.
i try to get more revs by
1) tensing the fingers more (maybe its mental?)
2) slowing down my shot to really get under the ball.
3) doing a pull on the shot. (ie no extension ,after release of thumb the forearm pulls upwards..not really recommended unless fantasically oily lanes)
4) use a guard ( not applicable to Kerhan who uses one to lessen revs.) -
but wun adding weight increase the strength to "rev up" the ball from bottom?? when u drop back to the normal weight?
I think that my revs are still not enough esp for heavier, more carrydown lanes, althought my teach says it's a gd number.
