NSP and SPP have already ruled themselves out.
Every opposition party thinks they are the smartest. Start fighting among themselves isn't smart at all. A bunch of clowns doing a circus show. Pathetic. Like that how to win?
I've been thinking about what SDP, SDA, and RP all stand to gain by running in an election where they're almost certainly going to lose their deposit.
Three possibilities:
1. They are moles of the ruling party tasked with sabotaging the overall opposition cause. I have to admit that I don't quite subscribe to this conspiracy theory.
2. They all genuinely think that they can win. Which means that all three parties are dumb and unable to effectively gauge their own abilities and odds of winning.
3. They see WP as a threat to their development, and will do everything they can to prevent a two-party system in Singapore dominated by PAP and WP.
(3) seems the most likely to me. Remember, in most countries, politics are usually dominated by two big parties (think: Democrats vs Republicans in the US, Labour vs Conservative in the UK). If two-party politics can take root in such large populaces, a two-party system in tiny Singapore will probably all but inevitable.
The other parties know that WP is on the rise and actually has a fair chance of becoming the main opposition party in a two-party system. Nothing short of a miracle would allow the other parties to rise.
When viewed this way, to them $16k would probably seem to be a fair price to pay to prevent WP's continued ascendance.
If this really the case..... then I have to say that the other three parties are really, really devious.

Ooh, what is this? CSJ has announced that SDP is withdrawing because "Singaporeans have said they do not want to see a multi-party race."
It doesn't absolve them from all their sins and the farce of the proposal, but now we hope the other muppets will do the honourable thing.

In a shock move, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) announced on Tuesday that it will not be contesting the Punggol East by-election.
Secretary-general Chee Soon Juan made the announcement at a press conference at the party headquarters, one day before Nomination Day.
As recently as Monday night, Dr Chee had indicated the party would contest when he told reporters that the SDP had decided on which candidate to field.
An SDP member also collected a political donation certificate earlier on Tuesday. Party activists have also been distributing flyers in Punggol East every night since the writ of election was issued last Wednesday.
The SDP had also tabled a proposal to the Workers' Party (WP) to field a unity candidate, which the WP rebuffed. SDP had then said over the weekend it would proceed "full steam ahead" with its plan to contest.
Dr Chee said at the press conference that he was heeding the call from the public to preserve opposition unity...

The power of the internet...
Either they pull out or face more critising flak fire from people...
It wont do them any good to provoke the people... I believe their pull out was mostly forced...

Well, it does seem to be the theory that makes the most sense to me. Singapore is simply too small for more than two strong political parties. In the long run, a strong WP is a greater threat to the other opposition parties than a strong PAP.
It even fits in with Chee's claim that they knew all along that WP would reject that idiotic plan. If WP rejected it as expected, SDP could try to paint WP as being selfish and unwilling to share power. If WP had really accepted it, well, SDP gets a foot in parliament.
But SDP in their breathtaking hubris totally miscalculated the backlash that they would get. And now, in an effort to save face and win back some lost support, they have to pull out and claim that they are 'bowing to the will of the people'.

They took us for fools because they're politicians, but they didn't count on us seeing through their petty little schemes.

SDP heeded calls to withdraw from the By-Election
Singapore Democrats
We had decided to contest the by-election in Punggol East because of the following factors:
(1) A set of alternative policies that we wanted to present to the voters.
(2) A candidate who would have a strong chance of defeating the PAP candidate.
(3) A well-organised party machinery to run a highly effective campaign.
However, we have decided to withdraw from the race.
Singaporeans have signaled clearly that they do not want to see a three-cornered contest in Punggol East which may dilute the vote and allow a PAP win.
We hear their voices and we have heeded them.
In politics, it is equally important to listen as it is to speak. We note the genuine concern that the PAP may get returned if there is a split in the opposition's support between the SDP and WP.
For this reason, we are stepping aside.

If my theory pans out, that might exactly be the kind of thing Chee wants you to say at this point.
If he can't wreck WP's chances, never mind, as long as he can win back some of the support he lost by his gross miscalculation.
That is honestly one of the wisest thing SDP has done so far.
However, SDA, and RP, as well as 2 independents are still around for the race, with WP, and PAP. I wonder if either SDA or RP would do the same, but I doubt it.
It's high time the opposition parties divide up the electoral map of Singapore in order to prevent multi corner fights in future elections.
I propose WP take the eastern side of Singapore since they have support there.
WP should take Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Aljunied GRC, East Coast GRC and Tampines GRC and the SMCs adjacent to these GRCs.
The rest of the pie the other parties can divide among themselves. This can also foil the gerrymandering tactics of the PAP.

Hello, this is singapore, not a game of Risk you can play by rolling favourable numbers.

But the opposition do the dividing up in most elections already.
