Education Minister Heng Swee Keat hit back swiftly at opposition Workers' Party claims that residents of Punggol East should vote for them to make the PAP "work hard".
"PAP has been working hard to come up with various ways to help Singaporeans even when they was no opposition in Parliament," he told reporters at a community event at Tampines Central Temple.
Referring to WP chief Low Thia Kiang's rally message on Saturday that people should vote for WP to keep up the pressure on PAP, Minister Heng turned the tables and said, "People should vote for PAP instead to make the WP work hard.
"Voters should look at what the various (PAP) MPs have done and contributed in their constituencies and in Parliament," he said.
"And I think they will come to the conclusion that they should vote for the PAP to make the Workers' Party work harder for you".
He also took pains to remind voters of Punggol East that it's "not about voting more opposition into Parliament".
"It's important to understand what this by-election is about. It's about electing the best candidate who can serve the residents of Punggol East," he said, adding that PAP candidate Koh Poh Koon is a "sincere and hardworking man" who understands the needs of residents and will work hard to improve their lives.
Minister Heng said after the last General Election in 2011, Singaporeans had given the PAP the mandate to form the government.
And the government has been working hard because "it is our duty and honour".
He highlighted the recent changes in education as one example of the PAP listening to ground sentiments.
"We have been investing in and improving our education system all these years even when there was no opposition in Parliament," he said.

I think for the past 2 general elections, everyone is sensible enough to realise rally turnouts don't necessarily translate to votes.
It will be a pretty close fight, since the area has roughly only close to 32000 elegible voters, every 320 votes translates to 1% of votes. Ouch.

In a dramatic twist, Reform Party says its rally on Sunday evening will proceed as planned.
This after it had said earlier in the morning that it would not proceed with its rally at an open field in front of Blk 183C at Rivervale unless the safety of party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam and its supporters would be ensured.
At the time, it said the party was still in discussion with the Singapore police and Interpol to provide extra security.
But in a Facebook post shortly before 2pm, the party said, "The police have assured us that it's safe toattend the rally and security has been stepped up. So come along and don't be afraid."
On Friday, RP chief and Punggol East by-election candidate Kenneth Jeyaretnam filed a police report after receiving messages "tantamount to death threats" against him and his family.
He added that there were more than one instance of these warnings made to him, his wife and his teenage son, who are both living in London.
"I used that phrase (tantamount to death threats) because the wording of the threats is too awful for me to say aloud, and I am sorry that I cannot be more precise," said the 53-year-old.
He added that he later received another "credible threat of violence".))))))))))))))
