If past experience is any indicator...
All TDs must standby for open mob whole of this 1st week of august, no MCs or day off allowed.
They just spend 5% of their $250 (x2.1 million) on taxi fare only, all hv to work till leg soft, fingers also soft.
Keep yourselves (and wheels) in good shape for this one!
Also, many organisations are giving out pay increment as high as 20% and even lowly paid people are getting at least a 100 increment, and when translate it with overtime, it could be $150 extra per month, and as for skill and higher position staffs, higher increment this year may make them spend more.
Profit sharing and bonuses are also on the pipeline this month, many organisation are giving out bonuses as singapore is still very profitable in doing business with a sharemarket that nearly went into a bull run last week due to westerners putting their wealth and funds in our market and land.
Therefore, unless people are prudent about next year, which many had predicted a global slow down and may go into a recession, this year, could be the last great harvest year for most before the cycle goes down again.
The objective of the Govt is to push wages at the lowest level from 1k to 1.5 or 1.8k, and with OT, hopefully a low wage singaporean can take home a 2k net pay, 2 months bonus, 1 month AWS, and the usual annual leaves and medical benefits. And by 2015 prior to the election by 2016, the key is to see singaporean at least earning 2.5 to 3k.
So if you are within that pay structure, then you should be quite ok behind a backdrop of high inflation and cost of living, but still consider as lower pay category.
The singapore unions I understand are giving out $100 voucher to lower income family, they are also giving education grant base on application and the coming back to school voucher which can be as much as $125 per kid.

Well, you know alot of kiam ku Singaporean, as a contractor to yards, everytime, keppel gives bonuses, you see new cars on their car park..
In taxi driving, simple logic, yr income will only increase if there is a fare increase without rental and fuel increase. Because of the rental increased and the fuel increased, fares was adjusted. It is not base on inflation, whereby cost of living had gone up by 5.2% for the last 3 years, meaning, in total 15% increased in your daily personal and household expenses, from meepok to Power supply bills.
If you said you are earning 3k now as taxi driver, you are no different from 10 years ago where you are earning about 2k, because the compounded inflation, taxi rental , fuel prices and cost of living would not justify any increment, if not, lesser in sense.
In a real world, given a 5% inflation, wage should increase beyong that 5%, so or 14% increment, 9% is then consider as real wage increment, the other 5% is to offset inflation.
Typically, for a TD, if, for the past 3 years, you are earning 3k, then you are actually losing out in a real wage market, given a 15% increase of 3k, you should get $3450, and that $450 only offset the cost of living, from high phone bills to essential items like rice, detergent, books, sugar, coffee...and so on. In term of real income increase, you get nothing unless you hit above the $3450 marks.
And without bonuses and other perks, I will strongly recommend that if you got opportunity to work again, let go taxis driving, unless you got not much choice or that your age and also character play a part.

More than 500 DBS Bank staff clamoured to bid farewell to their office in Shenton Way as the bank made the official move to its new premises at the Marina Bay Financial Centre (MBFC) on Friday.
They thronged the bank's last townhall meeting, held each quarter at the DBS Auditorium after the latest financial results are announced.
The staff gathered for a group photograph in front of the building.
Shuttle buses ferried the excited staff from their existing office to MBFC where there was a small lighting ceremony for the DBS logo on the building.
