SINGAPORE: The government has appointed a 13-member committee to look into the public transport fare adjustment formula and the framework for fare adjustments.
The committee comprises members from the Public Transport Council, academia, consumer association, labour movement, as well as the private and people sectors.
The Fare Review Mechanism Committee is chaired by Mr Richard Magnus, chairman of the Casino Regulatory Authority and member of the Public Transport Council.
In its statement, the Transport Ministry outlined the terms of reference for the committee.
The committee will review the effectiveness of the current fare adjustment formula and propose improvements.
The revised fare review framework should balance keeping public transport fares affordable with the long-term viability of the public transport operators, while encouraging operators to be efficient and encourage productivity improvement.
The committee will also have to ensure that the views of key stakeholders are adequately represented.
In a post on the committee's website, Mr Magnus said the committee will be working towards a revised fare review framework that will balance keeping public transport fares affordable, especially for those from low-income households, while ensuring that public transport operators remain viable as commercial entities.
He added that finding the right balance is not easy, but the committee is committed to doing the best it can.
MOT said the committee is expected to present its recommendations to the Transport Minister early next year (2013).
The public can also give their views to the committee at [email protected] or by post by August 12.
More information on the committee and its work can be found at this website.

Other than taxi services , dun think they categorize taxi as Public Transport .
All articles related inside the blog , not a single involvement of taxi ervices .
Taxis is a public transport lah, but unlike bus drivers, Mrt drivers, Taxis driver is not a public transport liability.
"especially for those from low-income households, while ensuring that public transport operators remain viable as commercial entities." this is the key sentence to ponder hard about it.
in chinese saying, there is this call "disturb the east, but hit the west". no mention now does not mean no mention at the last min before any formal final announcement and..
the final announcement at the end of approx a few weeks would probably be:
"..After hearing comprehensive feedback from all quarters and discussions with key stakeholders, due to changing market forces, despite our very best brainstorming efforts, we came to no other viable long term solution but to raise fares and increase rental. Of course while this is only our proposal, we would strongly recommend players in the Transport industry to take it into their reference when deciding their next course of action.."
:D
Should be considered as public transport, so can get transfer rebate.
But . . . whenever taxi companies want to increase price , must go through PTC ?
Pls lah , let me set my own taxi fare .
At the end of the day, it is a matter of increasing transportation fares, but now they do it by telling you that they have a committee set up to look into it blah blah this and that..so that when price goes up, mai kpkb ok
