Great Singapore Sale kicks off Friday
SINGAPORE: The annual Great Singapore Sale kicks off on Friday.
Despite the global economic uncertainty, organisers are optimistic that this year's event will rake in higher sales.
The Singapore Retailers' Association (SRA) hopes to improve on last year's sales revenue of some S$6.1 billion by up to 10 per cent.
More than 50 hotels and 1,000 stores are participating in the eight-week event. They include new malls like Changi City Point in the east and Jcube in the west of Singapore.
The event will also feature, for the first time, the Chinatown Visitor Centre and GTMC Travel, which will offer discounted souvenirs as well as value deals to local attractions.
SRA president, Dr Jannie Chan, hopes the event can offer a "total lifestyle experience that extends beyond shopping".
She said: "A lot of people are now planning trips to the Great Singapore Sale because it's become like a festival."
She added that not only shops are giving discounts, but restaurants, hotels and attractions are also giving out goodies.
She is also cautiously optimistic about the prospects for retailers.
She said: "We're in the middle of a very gloomy global economy. (In) Singapore currently, while we say there's a slowdown, definitely the last two months ... (there's) a bit more caution, but we're better off than other parts of Europe.
"So in that sense, we'll like to encourage more Singaporeans and tourists to spend with us this year."

BroadcastAsia 2012 promises to be bigger
SINGAPORE: Asia's key broadcast technology show, BroadcastAsia, promises to be bigger this year.
It'll have about 730 exhibitors from 41 countries - 12 per cent more than last year.
The four-day event, which starts on 19 June, will be held at Suntec Singapore.
It'll showcase the latest broadcast technology and products.
Organisers said the spotlight will be on Over-The-Top (OTT) content, which refers to services delivered using the Internet - normally from a provider to the viewer.
Consumers can watch video-on-demand content on their mobile devices and tablets.
While some industry players are concerned about the security of the technology, director of sales and operations at EVS, Protik BanerJee, hopes to offer solutions which may help this technology take flight.
"What is currently being offered you're seeing just one angle on the TV and when it is live. What OTT gives you is an opportunity to catch up - you can subscribe, that's the revenue generation model for most of the operators who roll it out. How it is helpful is, you see multiple camera angles. And they can do social networking along with that."
