[ST News] LTA raises taxi drivers' age limit to 75 from June

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will raise the age limit for taxi drivers to continue driving from 73 to 75.
It said this would allow older drivers who are still fit and healthy to continue driving.
Currently, all cabbies who plan to extend their vocational license beyond 70 have to pass a detailed assessment test. Those who passed could have their license renewed till they were 73.
From June 1 this year, they will be able to drive till 75 if they continue passing the assessment tests. These will either be conducted annually or at shorter intervals if deemed necessary.

I understand that Singapore is facing manpower shortage but by increasing the age limit of taxi drivers really pose potential road safety issues to other road users.

What should I do if I want to extend my Bus Driver's Vocational Licence (BDVL)/Taxi Driver's Vocational Licence (TDVL) beyond my 70th birthday?If you are currently holding a valid BDVL and/or TDVL, a letter will be sent to you 6 months prior to your 70th birthday. The letter will explain what you will need to do if you wish to extend your BDVL and/or TDVL past the age of 70 years. LTA's form for the "Assessment on Fitness to Drive for Vocational Licence Holders Aged 70 years and Above" will also be attached.The Assessment comprises a medical examination, an occupational therapy evaluation, and an on-road driving test. If you hold both BDVL and TDVL, you will have to undergo two separate on-road driving tests, one using a car and the other using a Class 3 bus. For the latter, you will be required to provide your own bus for the test.You will first need to go to a registered medical practitioner (any doctor) to complete the first portion of the Assessment form. If you are certified fit by your doctor, you will then need to proceed to make an appointment for the occupational therapist evaluation and on-road driving test at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Occupational Therapy Department (the contact details of the Occupational Therapy Department will be included in the letter sent to you 6 months before your 70th birthday. Once you have passed the Assessment, you may renew your BDVL and/or TDVL up to your 73rd birthday, with a non-refundable renewal fee of $40. You will need to continue to pass LTA’s annual medical examination at the ages of 71 and 72 years. -
Hey dats very good news, we can work till death! common I believe they can do much more than this right. How about mandatory for Taxi company to contribute the minimum CPF and recognizing MC for TD.
And instead of fining these companies for poor service rendered, channel the fines to instil Customers Service Course to enhance the service level of the px from driver. Its time to project ownership rather than keep receiving undue complains from px.
Give share option scheme like most MNC. At the end of the contract TD could exchange it for cash.
Happy customers mean more revenue for the company. Happy driver mean more on the road to meet the demands of taxi during peak hours, holiday and weekend.

Even if they want to increase the age limit because a lot of old people need to feed themselves and still pay for housing-they should limit the hours these old people work. Maybe only 3/4 day and not the full day. Too dangerous! At 75 ...their health might fail quite easily and suddenly without too much warning-and with the stress of the traffic and slower reflexes due to age-how can they allow it? Allowing a 75 year old retiree to drive leisurely at his own time and convenience, is different from allowing a 75 year old taxi driver to rush madly with traffic for a living!

Dat day spoke to a taxi warden at budget terminal, ex taxi driver reached 73, still looking good and fit, can't drive taxi so become taxi warden, good news for him, can drive taxi again

There is no forcing.
Only those that still want to drive would welcome the news.
Still want to drive is not good enough, must pass medical.
Any one can drop out whenever they want to.
75 does not mean you lan lan must drive till 75 yo.

That lady "tua luap nang" says they have a system in place to assess the fitness of the taxi drivers woh! At age 70 and above , yo ucan assess the person fit but a heart attack can come on suddenly due to the stress of the traffic- how to assess that? -

After age 45, heart attack in men can come anytime, due to the stress of the traffic and unhealthy lifestyle. Doctor with a stethoscope cannot access an impending heart attack.
So how...45...?

The oldest TU I ever know personally is 72 years old, yellow top driver, single, no descendant...last heard still driving, in one of the taxi stand group.
Local hear his taxi number, all cancel his call, only FT don't mind, cause they don't know...hahaha

I got to know a 70yo cabby whom I ferried to Mount venon, also single, young wife left him for another guy, poor chap, not much relatives, just a old sister with hubby, I sent him for free, afterall, my poor cabby brother, shameful for me to ask for service, I give the last trip, peak period somemore.
Worst is that he died in his 2 rooms flat for days until his sister visited him. So pity, haiz

My correction on that old TU, for the sake of this topic, this morning purposely call him up, no more driving, total retired....for 'pig' seek, god bless man.
