Call for more transparency on taxi fare calculations

  SINGAPORE: One-cent coins are no longer in circulation and most goods and services are charged in whole figures to reduce the hassle of consumers not having enough loose change for payment. But that has not been the case when it comes to cab fares and some passengers are calling for more transparency. That's because taxi companies in Singapore differ in their guidelines on fare calculations. ComfortDelGro has automatically programmed its cab meters to round down the fare to the nearest five cents, while SMRT encourages its drivers to collect the full fare by accepting cashless payments. Some passengers Channel NewsAsia spoke to said they have encountered instances when their fare was rounded up to the nearest ten cents.   Every 400m thereafter or less up to 10km $0.22 Every 350m thereafter or less after 10km $0.22 Every 45 seconds of waiting or less* $0.22 Whoever come out with the above formula has no brain. He or she did not consult the taxi driver on the implication of the implementation and negative impact of the formula. It caused much inconvenient and some dispute between taxi driver and their passenger. They should use 0.25 instead of 0.22.
