Well General,
I was actually working as a technician craftman in enginneering firm until I get retrenched, by then I was near 40s, quite difficult to get job except security officers, whic the pay cannot sustain to feed my family of 6, then I go and join shipyard contractors, daily rated, not bad, in good time can command 6 k, but hv to work like shit with condition of dangerous, demanding and dirty.
One day, one of my best buddy died in an industry accident, I felt very sad, his wife with two young childrens looks so pity, booking a driver to drive the van need more money, so I volunteer to only rent out the van and drive for him to Mount Venon. End up, I take on driving casket van as part time because we foreseen an aging singaporean may end up with a booming casket business.
However, singaporean now are living longer due to better medication and caring, so I hv to look for other avenue to supply my income. That is where I took up TD and become a jack of it.

good enough reasons to be forced to become a taxi driver?
Your tittle very good. Instead of "Why you become TD?" you ask "What force you to become TD?"
I work from Supervisor until middle management. Plastic Moulding Industry.
Then itchy backside, come out to do Education Business. Was successful in Batam, but have to come back to Singapore due to personal reasons. Singapore not so easy. This cannot, that cannot. Just open and close tuition center, lost almost $40K.
After a few years, want to join back Plastic Industry but realised that nobody wants to call me up for interview. Strongly suspect due to cheap (and younger) foreign talents. Savings starts to dry up, become panic.
Former colleague now TD. Tells me if willing to work hard, no problem to pay for roof and put food on table. Until now, still very positive, never regret my decision.
There is a few unique points about being a TD.
1) My office can be anywhere, in Singapore. Just start engine, and I am ready for work.
2) My work timing can be anytime. If I go dinner, and finish dinner at 10.30pm. Just start engine, and I am ready for work.
3) If I have something important to do, like attend my kid's Graduation. Just put 'Busy' and I am on my way.
4) If somebody got good lobang, ask me free or not... (I think I no need to answer this one)
TD, one of the most satisfying occupation in the world.
but please start as relief first hor...
go read my other postings in one of the threads...
if you really want family time... half shift the best...

What TD ?
Worked in local bank for 10 years. Becos of a silly comment i made on Facebook, i was asked to leave. No chance, no compensation. Tried looking for jobs but at 46, chances are slimmer than getting a disposal job from a taxi stand!! (which i really got today!)

Good answer. Classic answer.
Force ?
Was an outdoor salesman for many years , familiar with Spore's route , so taxi driving come in handy when i resigned from sales line .
It's quite natural the job come in when i resigned , really tired of going for interview again , 28 times i went for interview .
Most never call back , some i rejected their offers .
But when i rejected them , decision has been made to drive a cab .
That time never think so much , just need a salary and food on the table .
Never lah think what own boss whatever , just need to continue my life , salary must come in .
Went into taxi course with a MUST PASS and PASS QUICKLY mentallity , take it as a test , a challenge for myself , pass and progress into the next level .
I have got no time to dilly dally with the course .
Actually my mentor was the Elder Brother of TaxiUncle.com's Paul Yio .
He said simple things about taxi driving .
I remember he told me "$2100 very easy to get one ."
Without he saying $2100 can get , i would think i will never drive a cab , ever .
My expectation very low one , $2000 cash nett a month is enough that time .
That was the time i decided to give it a shot .
The rest until today , it's history like what they said .
So today, your net can reach 4200 pts per month or not??
