Hi Brothers,
I need your advice.
As a new TD Wannabe, should I start as a Relief or OMO Taxi Driver? I am thinking of starting as a Relief.
What about you? Are you a Relief or OMO Taxi Driver? What is the advantage of being one?
First, you need to consider which company you want to drive for, transcab, cdg, silver and so on..., then you decide to be relief or OMO.
I saying this because company like cdg now have a long waiting list, about 3 month plus for a new cab, sometime even tell you, no more cab, not sure when can get one for you. But you register with them first, put yourself into the waiting list, then go drive as relief, learn about TD, after few months, once you are better equipped and the taxis is available, then can consider driving as OMO.
As for transcab, OMO can get it on the spot, but hv to consider CNG prices and the pump station availiability, same goes to silver, only put at changi.
By and large, unless you are already an experience TD, you should start as a relief, not only relief gives you the learning and training needs, it also provide a wider aspect and flexibility in choosing to be OMO in near future.
@bowah, Thanks for your advice.
In your view, which company offer the best combination of low rental rate and high quality car?
At this moment, there is high demand on becoming hirer for CDG, this tell you they are most probably the best around town.
But having said that, I have to qualify that others can be equally good if you can know the in and out of using it. Unless you are talking about mannual gear, i30 from silver is not a bad choice, for auto, most rental are above 100, beside cdg sonata, cheverolet epica by SMRT and Trancab is also good, but in such class,
Wish from transcab can offer the lowest rental and yet the car is good on in par with the koreans make, the only problem is their CNG, if you live near Bukit Batok, should be quite reasonable to take them.
There is also another thing you need to get, the calls, cdg offer the best calls, being the largest fleet, they got a big customer base and yet can operate in an economic of scale cost.
Overall, driving a cab is not about the rental, the quality of car alone, any new taxis is good, after 3 years, all have problem, just big or small problem only, rental is somehow similar due to competition, some higher, but good calls, some lower, but high fuel cost, and so on. Other than the tangible attributes, you also need to look into the intangible side, like the know how, know why, know where, know when and know what to pick, take and time. Therefore, to take a cab, you need a holistic view rather than just quality of car and rentals alone.
If you look at some limo driver here, Merc or chrsyler, good quality car, high rental, but they still earn more and able to cover the high rental tells you that driving is not merely just rental alone.
If you are relatively new to the industry....
99% will advice you to start as a relief driver 1st....
Learn the trade, learn the roads, learn where to go, if you are in the North, South, East, West or Central to look for passengers.
Some TDs stay as relief drivers for all their lifespan in taxi driving. Well, life (as relief) is more relaxing than OMO as you got to pay full day rental for almost 365 days (no joke), probably less some Free Rental Days and hirer's driving bonus. Even when you are sick for 2-3 days, the company will still deduct your rent w/o fail (thru Giro). If you are late in payment, they will bombard you with phone call.... just like ah long... .
As relief, you just drive your shift (have to agree to the shift hours changing initially before agreeing to the hirer), pay half shift rental. 12hrs work and sufficient rest + some social life.
Those (TDs) whom go straight to OMO needs to have the guts to venture.... provided you knows the road well, or where to pick passengers depending on the timing is essential or simplying cannot get a suitable hirer around your area (but this is a big risk as you may not know the roads well)...
Good Luck... I got to run lah... got job at 12.30pm..
I live in Woodlands and I think the closest CNG station is at Mandai. What I don't like is there are only a few stations in Singapore, the unstable price of CNG and also the future of CNG.
Can I verify if TransCab Toyota Wish 1.8/2.0 rental daily is less than $80 after the monthly rebates? If so, for a 12 hours relief driver, one can expect rental to be less than $40?
