LTA reviewing taxi driver retirement age

Cabby Chua Yang Heng is dreading his 73rd birthday this year. By law, he must retire. But this could change.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) told The Straits Times this month that it is reviewing the age limit to hold a taxi driver vocational licence.
The review comes amid repeated calls by the 12,000-member National Taxi Association to let cabbies drive until they are 75 years old. The retirement age was last raised from 70 to 73 in 2006.
The association made its appeal three years ago but has lately pushed harder. It sought the support of President Tony Tan Keng Yam last August when he was still contesting the presidential election.

Why not just make the retirement age 120?
No need to keep reviewing every few years.

But I reckoned it is a road hazard as their eye-sight get tried easily.... (there is why u see alot of Old Men at Geylang washing their eye-balls with PRC ladies...

Another MERC cab driver just pass away, very sad, young chap, only at his late thirties..... Just sleep and never wake up again, due to fatigue? Nobody know....very hardworking youngster..... Drive taxi until 75? god blessed you.....

heard of the news @ Zion Road yesterday.... the wake is at AMK Ave 8....
only 36yo. started driving OMO for only a few months.

From the information i got....
he drove non-stop for almost 36hrs w/o resting......
even his groups' (4 limo groups) members asked him to take a rest.... he still want to pick a trip from Airshow before going home.....
that's the last of him liao...

You see JDI, recently I met a lot of this kind of commando drivers, using high rental taxi, but try to drive like a normal cab.... Of course due to availability of taxi from company, some drivers don't care, temporary drive limo first, cause recent years, the turnover of white rubbish truck very high.....and company nowsday also jin Jin chye chye, not like last time, interview, interview and interview before they allowed you to drive limo.......now, as long u want to pay this kind of rental, they fxxx care you.... People at this forums had to bear this in mind, unless you jia ba buy pao type....or else u really had to work out something first before join WHITE...I rarely drive over weekend unless there's usage for my clients and my MERC cab still can park in carpark, don't need relief...I plan and work towards this direction until now.....if I really want to whack the taxi like nobody business, I will drive sonata and get a relief.... Maybe forumers might not understand what I mean, but this poor chap who had rest in peace already proven a lot of things......

Fatigued drivers.....
Though Money is important.....
Health is MOST essential. ( No health = No wealth ).
Driving (any mode of transportation) needs sufficient rest... (at least 7-8 hrs of good sleep). Also, Insurance access (upon accident) also went up lately....
Regular Toilet+kopi breaks are needed (at least once every 3hrs) for Professional Taxi Drivers like you guys....
I take breaks every hour....

Me no jia ba buy pao type, I need $ more than anyone else..... Just feel sad for this young chap, wrong direction, 4 groups but cant even find a good mentor to guild himself......sigh.....

Yeah.. There are always good and bad days, local lingo will be known as "not everyday is sunday". Hope all brudders new or experienced rem to rest enuff as i know some td really worked too hard esp those with personal quota. There is really no purpose in ruining your own health for the few bucks. Anyone needs some idle inspiration can consult the idle kings here :p

Mr TKY pay is SGD4.3 millions per year x 6years term before pay review. If I got this kind of pay check like him I also work until 75.76.77.78.79.80...... If I can get my 75 yr old dad to be his Ahmad, he dare to sit? People like them is r♿tarded, so stupig ideas from those people thinking of upping the maximum age of TVL of TD. Working beyond of that retirerment age Is A STEP BACKWARDS. If you see the budget 2012 you will know elderly CPF contribution is very less attractive. How to pay the minimum Healthcare cost around the island when the cost is so much unaffordable to the elderly. Getting help from social workers is just not the way to solve their problems as medical expenses is getting higher and higher each year. YKWIM. Cra🅿society.

Members , esp those younger drivers , in order not to drive until so old , pls go and buy a set of retirement insurance when young .
Plus your existing house , and some savings .
U actually need not drive until so old .
We should be idling at the age of 55 .
Not working so hard , drive past time yes .

U day dreaming ar ? The taxi fare structure are encouraging more to drive more than 12 hours .U have to drive longer now , to earn a decent living .
Due to the low taxi fare now .

.Correct at least 7hrs of sleep per day~~~ u wake up fresh n u can actually earn
as much as ppl who sleep 5hrs nia cause they r driving in a fatiguied state........

Live report from the wake.......a sad day we lost a brother......cremating at Mandai.......with the amount of white sending him off for the last journey, you know he is a good guy........ His wife did manage to wake him up, but fell asleep back, too tired? I think that's the last glance to his dearest wife....... May my good friends rest in peace.......

The normal driving of most drivers end at age 70. Driving Taxis are even more taxing... driving with the brain sleeping (eyes open) is worst than drunk driving. Hopefully LTA reads this.....(very unlikely)...

me driving for 3 weeks plus as OMO,already feeling the stress and fatigue creeping in!i normally start fr 12 noon till 2 am.also earn not enough cos don't know the routes well,don't know where to pick up passengers and driving skills not very good!another thing no social life and lack of exercise!also no good proper eating habits

driving omo must also plan for some good rest in order to sustain long term driving as omo. omo cost is average about $120-150 depend type of model. just imaging how much extra hour you must put it in. best is to pick up the lowest cost like crown , doesn't matter it is manual. any auto taxi will be higher cost

i think if we tds still need to drive after age of 65, then something is wrong with the system. to think that you still need to drive at the age of 75, poor thing lah. government basically has no heart . NTA must be crazy to support it. if drive till age of 75 i really don't no what to say about it, maybe it's show that td nadays just aren't making enough to save for retiremement age when reaching 65. retire like any other people, , must work for extra 10yrs for it
