Lukewarm taxi takings during LNY despite hike

SINGAPORE: This is the first Lunar New Year since the recent taxi fare hikes.
Taxi drivers said takings are generally about the same as last year's despite the higher rates. But they declined to reveal any figures.
For a minority, business is up by 10 to 15 per cent, but that could be dependent on where they ply their trade such as at hotspots like the airport and Marina Bay Sands.
But this was not the case for some taxi drivers, who reported lower takings.
Taxi driver Magendran said: "It's terrible, I think because of the fare increase this year. Not like last year or the previous year (when it) was wonderful."
He also said that his takings on the two days leading up to the Lunar New Year were "very bad".
"I am not surprised because (each) time they structure the fare, this is the problem we face as taxi drivers."

Even though I am a TD, I cannot accept being a cheapo, even If I wasn't one.
Hello this is CNY, even coffeeshop raise prices during these times just because thy open. Whats wrong for any TD to earn a little extra, nor forgetting that they have to slog for it, on their own 'big day'?
Anyway how much more can a person drive? Even I dont celebrate CNY, also gotta stop and think about tomorrow, no point going flat out for a few extra bucks.
Today's article in the paper put it best, since 2007, you can forget finding $2 meals in coffee shops, it's now $3.50 at least, more than 50%. So if TD earn 2-5 bucks depending on trips, when they get no bonus etc, etc, is it wrong for the fare hike?
Dont forget the magic number that taxi companies will come out to get back from paying higher COEs for newwer vehicles!
We Tds are awaiting that with baited breath!

Yes, on my way to work these few days, see lots of taxis with green sign on top, kopi tiam also more cabs parking, siao liao.
