The term Jumpstyle is used both for a musical genre and dance. It has been enormously popular in The Netherlands and Belgium in the summer of 2006 [1], and to a lesser extent in 2005, although oldschool jumpstyle music is already found at the beginning of the 90s.
2. Genre:
It is a subgenre of hard dance, its is characterised by a distorted 909 kick drum used in a 4 to the floor beat. Jumpstyle can be seen as a slowed down version of old style Gabber,[2] but it has since solidified its position as a genre of its own. It's tempo is in a range of 135-140 bpm, which makes it slower than actual hardstyle (tempi ranging from 140-160 bpm). Jumpstyle is most popular in the Netherlands. It first originated from Hardcore, and older Jumpstyle music therefore sounds more or less like a slow version of (happy) hardcore. Modern day Jumpstyle - with its characteristic dancing style - first originated from Flanders - where it was called Jump instead of Jumpstyle - in the late 90s. It wasn't very popular in the Netherlands until 2004, presumably because of the then popular Hardstyle.[2]. Later on, Jumpstyle also got the attention of the French and German people, but in these countries it never became the massive hit as seen in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Jumpstyle music usually uses a happy chorus, with a loud bass supporting it. The melody can resemble trance. The use of sound samples out of movies is heavily used.
