o i'd love to see artworks :D do upload ^^
basically i will start shaping the figure lightly then after i applied the basic details/structure for eye, mouth face etc etc.. then i start adding different level of shading and contrast at the right places ( hopefully ). i use my fingers to rub as well. rubbing is not cheating in my opinion. i vary my level of 'rubbing' the shades. most times i will use my finger to gently stroke the shades. i will only really rub quite abit if the shade is dark or is sketchy but possible to rub safely till smoothen.
maybe for sketching is more of the simple task compared to actual drawing. as sketching requires most of the time basics like cross-hatching and just lined shadings. while refined drawing, the shadings are rendered properly or so called smudged till smooth. the term smudge is misunderstood when used in drawing. using your finger to render the shadings when practiced and understood correctly you will be able to smudge correctly without making the shades look weird and dislevelled. it takes time to understand that i think
so if your teacher dun wan u to use your finger, then you can get different levels of pencils to make shading easier for you from lihgt to dark ba :)

who taught u how to draw like this. beeteeful
Liking what I see so far. With more practice and observation you'll be able to to make the characters appear less stiff, LY.
Peter: I don't agree with what your teacher says (partly because I do that and get away with it at ADM ). Any technique that gets the job done and result you desire is fine, unless he/she actually wants you to try out more techniques first. As artists we all have different styles, and there's no fixed formula for everything.

thank you :) i'm mostly self-learned but that doesn't mean all credit's to myself. i take in advice in the past like add volume and atmosphere to the drawings by drawing more contrasted drawings. and i will frequently in the past go to deviantart and look at pencil portraits drawn by good artists and it'll let me think, if they can do it i will to ( lol sry i know it sounds stupid :D :D ) then i figured how to draw better :) i'm still learning :)

On the other hand, I basically called that teacher a liar.
All I'll suggest is that he gives other techniques a serious try, and find what works best for each concept or effect.
My old automobile renderings are in my room at home and won't be able to post them for a while, though I think I posted at least one here last year.
i took Art as an O levels subject.. our batch was the first to do preparatory works in A3 size papers.
I've done my drawing and painting on thin A3 sizes papers instead of the usual A3 size drawing block
i'll never forget the time i've spent to complete each A3 paper, and,
i've somehow learnt preservance during batik waxing / painting muahahahaa
