MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 ‘Italian’
The composition of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite marked the turning point in his career, leading him to the “neo-classical” style which was to dominate his output for several decades; although based on some of Pergolesi’s music, it featured Stravinsky’s signature use of modern harmonies and rhythmic modification. Mendelssohn’s most popular symphony captures the many moods of a tourist wandering across colourful Italy; ironically it was never published in his lifetime. Two rarely-heard works for bassoon are also showcased – Weber’s Andante and Rondo ongarese and Elgar’s Romance, a piece that portrays the bassoon as poet and singer.
