singapore govt policy has always been allowing people to choose their religion and fostering interfaith beliefs and peace.
I believe that the govt tries to use religion as a tool for promoting peace. However, i believe personally this is not a effective decision because religion is fundamentally based on the belief in god and religious books contains other beliefs beside promoting peace that are not based on proper reasoning.
These other issues, like ethical issues, afterlife and human souls are not well reasoned, and in my opinion, wrong. Wrong beliefs lead to wrong actions and it will affect the progress of peace, science and humanity as beliefs are tied with laws, policies and thus tied to daily lives.
Using religion to promote peace, while the intention is good and commendable, is an ineffective medium and has side effects that create problems. The world is still stuck in the religion rut and there is this tendency to encourage religious harmony.
I think accepting religion is thus a bad thing because it allows people to avoid using reason for their beliefs and action. This, is bad for the progress of humanity, which has being pushed forward largely by reason and discovering the natural laws of reality like maths, sciences and technology.
I therefore hoped that we can really, through the use of words, persuade govt and people to really begin the process to explain to people why we should not use religion as a guide to our individual and collective way of living. Morality, should be a issue of humans, not god. Putting god into the question will only complicate and mess up the process.
Its not easy to convince people and I am not the first person to try to put forward this argument; and I would also not be the last.
