Qns for Pilot

  If you want to become a pilot, what requirements do you need?
  If you went for lasik before, do you need to submit medical report stating you went for it before? will going for lasik affects the chance of you being a pilot placed behind those who have perfect eyesight and never went for the surgery before?

  Hi
  Lasik is not an acceptable mean of eyesight correction, under certain countries regulations.
  It doesn't matter if you submit medical report or not, the examiner can tell.
  Don't ask me how..
  
  Why not go to SQ website, click under careers n look for their requirements, I think it is rather well specified there.

  Pre-requisites for SIA (Singapore Airlines) cadet pilot program are:-
  
  Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents or Malaysian Citizens.
  Minimum 5 credits in the General Certificate in Education (GCE) Ordinary
  Level Examination or its equivalent. These must include credits in English,
  Mathematics and a Pure Science subject, preferably Physics, taken at one
  sitting. In addition, applicants must possess one of the following:-
  
  (a) minimum 2 'A's and 2 'O's, including General Paper, in the GCE 'A' Level
  Examination (or its equivalent); or
  (b) minimum 2 Principal Passes (excluding the languages; Mathematics and
  Science subjects preferred) and 2 Subsidiary Passes in the STPM (or its
  equivalent); or
  (c) a Polytechnic Diploma; or a Degree
  (d) You must be medically fit and have visual acuity of at least
  6/60 without optical aids, correctable to 6/6.
  *25 year old and above for Singaporean

  Hi
  I assume u are asking for pilots holding Singapore 9V ATPL and RSAF..
  For the time being, NO. as Lasik is a relatively new procedures, I thik around 4 or 5 yrs ago only..I think they need time to see & R&D how stable the lasik correction is. FYI, FAA, CAA ,our local reg do not allow ....yet.
  Reason being
  1: Opacities
  2. Variability of vision at high altitude n pressure
  3. Cornea scarring
  4. Hazing due pressure build up.

  Echoing what Megatron has said, although there's high success rate for LASIK but it may still leave many with some slight refractive errors. There are known side effects like:
  - glares (halos, stardusts)
  - lose of visual acuity
  - reduced contrast sensitivty
  - corneal flap complications
  
  To my understanding, the aircraft operation is visually demanding and the cockpit environment can be unfriendly. So you won't know what might happen if complication strikes. You don't wanna risk lives when you're 10000m up in the air, do you?
  
  Maybe in time to come local regulation may change, till then study hard!
