SingaporeÂ’s Budget Terminal (BT) will be celebrating itÂ’s first birthday on 26 March 2007, with fun-filled activities for both passengers and public, organised by the CAAS from 19 to 25 March 2007 at BT.
BT Trivia:
• Asia first LCC terminal built
• Cost S$45 million to build
• Size of three football fields
• Unsurprising contested winning name from among 12,000 other entries
• Targeted 5 million passengers per year but expecting an initial capacity of 2.7 million passengers.
• Landing and parking charges remains the same but security and passenger charges somewhat 50% cheaper than T1 & T2
• With only TR & 5J operating there
According to a recent speech the Minister of Transport reported that BT handles about 130,000 passengers per month. Hence an estimated of 1.56 million passengers per annum, which is nearly 60% of passenger volume as compared to the initial targeted figure.
Since LCC now consist of almost 15% of Changi's air traffic, there will probably be continual growth of LCC within the region. Some thoughts:
• Will more airlines choose to operate from BT?
• Will BT continue to expand and meet passenger volume target or eventually turn into white elephant?
• If airlines from T1 choose to operate from BT or T2, then is T3 necessary?
