HI ALL
weather is a big part of aviation and flying, n of course ,affects our daily lives.
AS aviation buffs/enthusiasts, a good understanding of weather goes a long way.
May I suggest a good movie on TCS 5 this evening, Day after tomorrow..a far fetched story but in Scientific & Meterological theory, it may just happened if all conditions are met.
It shows how vulnerable Earth n we, are. everything is inter-linked.so treasure this EARTH n don;t complain too much about weather..every phenomenon has its place n even with global warming n greenhouse effects, the EARTH ,or nature, still has its way of balancing out disasters , though in ways painful n incomprehensive to us.

Geography plays a very important role in aviation,in fact, it's pivotal.
an understanding of Form of the Earth, Climatology, weather systems ,atmosphere goes into the making of a good aviator as well as for mariners also. otherwise, it's also good knowledge for us .
Thing is ,being sinaporeans ,we are fortunate ,(or not) to have same climate whole year round.we do not have to worry about snow, ice, hail, winter clothings, winter drivings, hurricane and so take forgranted what we have.
jus a simple rain or flood is a big hoo haa here n people get into all sort of road accidents from drizzle. It shows how " good" our WET driving skills are.Originally posted by polarsnake:I think it's more related to Geography -

Last month there is one documentary from Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel said that it is not possible because freezing is a slow process through air medium. I beg to differ.I had seen Rime Ice form on leading edges in 2mins! and that is very dangerous.
If you had caught the documentary on Discovery about fisherman in Alaska or Greenland fishing for Alaskan crabs in sub zero temperature, you would have seen ice forming on the floor n masts of the trawlers right in front of ur eyes!
It;s too long here for me to explain about supercooled waterdroplets or how a Supertyphoon Vortex can suckup so much heat that it lowers the temperature at a very fast rate esp in a lower pressure system but it is possible for water to freeze at a very fast rate, which is why we get hails! Hurricanes are nature 's vehicles to balance the high thermal temp in the tropics.

Ok...if it is not possible, why then does pilots fear ICING? either Carburettor icing or Flight control surfaces icing, freezing of Jet A1? WHy then does all planes ( as far as I know) ensure that hot bleed air from the engines are used for De-Icing n keeping Jet A1 fluid? At 35,000FT, FL350 , (the OAT ) Outside Air Temperature is MINUS 59DegC!
Why does airports in Temperate countries have DE-ICING hoists? N why ,even on ground , engineers n dispatchers N pilots have to watch for ICing on aircraft, if these NGC scientists say NOT possible for Ice to freeze in quik time?I dont know because I didnt watch this particular episode. I take what I watch in Discovery with a pinch of salt, esp for certain programs.
A droplet of supercooled water ,at say, 30,000ft drops n form a block of solid ice, ( called Hail or hailstones , )while on its journey to the ground . How long does it take for that droplet to drop from that height n hit the ground? If freezing is not possible, it would take that droplet days to freeze or it would just form rain..
I am no scientist or weatherman but I share what I know , Im sure there are many resources one can find to support this in the net.
I had seen ICE form on landing gear during a 20min descent n still those ICE were solid n melting slowly when I landed in DXB. imagine DXB, 38Deg C! I had seen ICE form on leading edges while taxiing out to RNWY at Heathrow in 10mins.OAT 3degC.

i think the documentary was saying more on the whole world becoming ice.
not ice on an object. or a location. -

its about the super low temperatures depicted in the movie. its not antarctica, its way beyond antarctica temperatures.
they even said at that kind of temperature no one can even walk around, which happened in the movie. -

What we are experiencing is a low Pressure systems. SG pressure or QNH has dropped from a usual 1012-3 to 1009, n constants temp are 24deg C. today temp was 24degC n dew point was 24DegC so it means precipitation,,RAIN!
yes , some phenomenon are taking place n with the Canadian Artic Shelve that dislodge itself due global warming recently, things are not looking good.
Mind you, that piece of ice is the size of 12,000football fields,!! it could cause flooding and "natural desalination" disrupting the entire marine ECO-Sytem. that break of the Canadian artic Ice shelf signified a cross or break of our climate threshold.
