Hi Sir, yes ,new & fresh from oven.
1st of all, I would like to thank Capt Pitot for thinking highly of me & including me here. MOD or not, our purpose is to contribute in a most factual & realistic delivery, hopefully dispelling any "myths " that people may hav of aviation n what goes in & around the aviation world.
but it is everybody's contribution that will make this FORUM, founded by i think Pitot, sum snake ( haha ) n MG.
Ok , now to answer ur qns..
When ATC told the pilot to " Maintain this Freq,.." it means that the a/c is under direct control of tat ATC,,and as u said it, ATC may get back to a/c on some request like a diversion due WX, break from Speed control..etc".
"Cleared for take-off, wind 020 at 5".. this is the final clearance given to an a/c ( at RNWY Holding point ) before the a/c enters the RNWY ,sometimes during taxi, a/c will also b cleared for take off, sumtimes we are cleared for LIE UP, meaning we can proceed onto the RNWY n hold for " Cleared for take off clearance"..the pilot murmurs ( mus b our own local guys )..they always do THAT!! I dun noe why!! well, the captain or FO, depednign who is the PF or PNF, will REPEAT wat the instructions were . n if its correct, ATC will jus say the callsign of the a/c. e.g I will read back,
TWR : Singapore two two, you are cleared for take off, wind zero two zero at 5. Contact Tower at 1186."
SQ22 : " Singapore two two cleared for take-off , wind zero two zero at five."
TWR : " Singapore two two."
well, the murmur cud be really jus bad speech but mostly its very hard to hear VHF freq,,HF is worst..and over the internet, its even more diluted, depedning on ur sound card or speakers...haha that is why A/G communications are moving towards a data method like CPDLC .
A/C can monitor up to 3 VHF freq simultaneously n 2 HF, switching freq doesnt mess up atc ops at all . If they call n we are not in taht FREQ watch, then they will activate what is known as a SELCAL. its like a pager..wz SOUND n LIGHT signal in the cockpit .
ATC FREQ are switched constantly from one ATC to another. ATC will instruct a/c to COntact nex ATC at different FREQ. say from Singapore Radar to Malaysia Area control . n upon first contact we identify ourselves, Position,Flight Level SQUAWK n the new ATC will respond with Callsign n " IDENTIFIED". n maintain heading ..etc..etc..
Hope this answers some of ur queries.
I will go listen to this liveatc website when I have the time. haha.

Hmm, ok this one should be ATC to Aircraft: " .... .... , maintain this frequency"
Does that actually means some pilots will continue to switch frequency untill he gets what he wants? Wouldn't that be messing up ATC ops? Or isiz just another way of saying 'I will get back to u shortly" ...
Also, i think after the ATC gives the aircraft " .... ... , Clear for take-off" . THere will be some inaudible mumurs form the pilot, for what ??
That's all i can remember, if i come across more, i will continue to ask ...
