Substitute Kazemian hands Iran winning start

KUALA LUMPUR – Substitute Javad Kazemian scored 13 minutes from time as Group C favourites Iran came from a goal down to beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in their opening match of the AFC Asian Cup at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Wednesday.
The Uzbeks went in front through a Rahman Rezaei own goal after 15 minutes but Iran battled back after the break, levelling the score through Seyed Jalal HosseiniÂ’s 55th minute header before Kazemian sprinted clear to net the late winner.
The victory put the Iranians level on points with group leaders China, who hammered co-hosts Malaysia 5-1 on Tuesday.
Uzbekistan created the first chance of the match in the fifth minute as Timur Kapadze stole between two defenders to reach a Vitaliy Denisov cross, only to put his header straight at Iran goalkeeper Hassan Roudbarian.
Iran manufactured an opening of their own two minutes later when Ali KarimiÂ’s defence-splitting pass released Vahid Hashemian on the right side of the area, the Hannover 96 striker firing in a shot that was well stopped by Uzbek goalkeeper Pavel Bugalo.
Bugalo was called into action again two minutes later he rushed off his line to gather the ball at the feet of Hashemian as the Iranian forward cut into the area from the right flank.
Both sides were still settling into their stride when Uzbekistan took the lead following a calamitous error by Rezaei.
Chasing a hopeful long ball lofted forward by Denisov, the Livorno defender appeared to have the beating of Ulugbek Bakaev as he headed the ball back towards goal from the edge of the box.
But Roudbarian had strayed off his line and the ball looped over a helpless goalkeeper to hand Uzbekistan the lead.
The central Asian side nearly extended their lead eight minutes later when a free-kick from the right by skipper Server Djeparov found Kapadze, whose unchallenged header went agonisingly wide of RoudbarianÂ’s right post.
Two minutes before the break, a cross from the left by Hashemian found an unmarked Rassoul Khatibi, who headed wide from inside the area.
Kazemian came on at the break for Khatibi and the right wingerÂ’s introduction helped to spur the Iranians to life as they levelled the score 10 minutes into the second half.
Iran skipper Mehdi Mahdavikia swung in a corner from the left and Hosseini rose majestically above the Uzbek defence to meet the ball with a downward header that just crept in at the far post.
Iran turned up the heat and went close to taking the lead five minutes after the hour mark when an excellent run and cut back by Kazemian was hacked clear by Aleksey Nikolaev just before reaching a lurking Javad Nekounam.
Nekounam would get another chance three minutes later as Kazemian made another fine run down the right flank and crossed for the Osasuna midfielder, who headed straight at Bugalo.
For all of IranÂ’s pressure, it was the UzbekÂ’s who nearly went back in front with 18 minutes remaining as Djeparov lofted the ball over the Iranian defence to Kapadze, who saw his effort stopped by the feet of the onrushing Roudbarian.
Iran netted the winning goal five minutes later as TeymourianÂ’s fine defence-splitting through ball released Kazemian, who drilled a low shot past the advancing Bugalo from just inside the area.
The game heated up in the closing minutes and Iran coach Amir Ghalanoei was sent-off from the bench with six minutes remaining by Kuwaiti referee Saad Kameel Al Fadhli after throwing a water bottle at the fourth official. -
The final will be held in Jakarta.
hmm.... The pitch is the worst of the 4 host even though the stadium is the biggest. It's very rough.
Sorry if there are Indonesians here. No offends.... I don't know why nothing seems to go well in Indonesia.
In my opinion, the final should be held either Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.
These 2 cities are more developed and more stable than Jakarta. Facilities are better there.
How can lights go off? It's not fair to the players of both sides.
It not only waste their time but also makes the players more tired.
Players can get injured easily.

Korea and Saudi Arabia share draw

JAKARTA – Saudi Arabia captain Yasser Al Qahtani scored from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time to earn his side a 1-1 draw with Korea Republic in their opening AFC Asian Cup encounter on Wednesday evening.
The Al Hilal hit man struck after Australian referee Mark Shield awarded a debatable penalty when Malek Maaz was adjudged to have been fouled by Oh Beom-seok, cancelling out Choi Sung-kukÂ’s 66th minute opener.
Choi had beaten Saudi defender Kamil Al Mousa to Yeom Ki-hunÂ’s cross from the left before heading beyond Yasser Al Mosailem to give the 2002 World Cup semi-finalists the lead.
But the game was marred when, five minutes from time, a power failure in the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium saw play stopped for almost 25 minutes before what was left of the game was played out.
It was a chaotic end to a game that had started with the Saudis giving the Korean defence a major fright with less than a minute on the clock.
Malek MaazÂ’s pace saw him sear down the left before firing in a cross that was the perfect height for Al Qahtani, but the Al Hilal man could only glance his header across the face of goal.
That was an early wake-up call for the Koreans and from there the half became an intriguing midfield battle.
Choi had a lively start with his speed and trickery keeping the Saudi defence on their toes while at the other end a break through midfield by Ahmed Al Mousa in the 25th minute set up Maaz, but his shot was bundled round the post by Lee Woon-jae.
Cho Jae-jin threatened with a header two minutes later before almost claiming he spectacular opener three minutes ahead of the break when his overhead attempt following Oh Beom-seokÂ’s cross was tipped over the bar by Al Mosailem.
With barely seconds left in the half Al Mosailem was called into action again when Kim Chi-woo fired in a low shot which bounced in front of the Al Ahli goalkeeper, who used his legs to clear.
Maaz continued to look the Saudi most likely to score in the second half when, seven minutes after the restart he capitalised on an error by Oh to take possession 35 yards from goal, only to fire off a shot that went just wide.
Cho saw his header from YeomÂ’s free kick go just wide six minutes later before Choi gave the Koreans the lead in the 66th minute.
Al Mousa was caught ball watching as YeomÂ’s centre came in from the left and the Seongnam Ilhwa man crashed his header beyond the reach of Al Mosailem.
The goal was ChoiÂ’s last contribution to the game as he made way for Lee Chun-soo immediately after the restart, but it took the Saudis only 11 minutes to pull level.
Maaz was confronted by Oh just inside the penalty area and, as he tried to go round the Pohang Steelers midfielder, the Al Ahli man went to the ground and Shield pointed to the spot.
From there, Al Qahtani – who had been virtually anonymous throughout the game – sent Lee the wrong way to earn the Saudis a point before the stadium was plunged into darkness.
When the game resumed, Saad Al Harthi fired off a long-range attempt in the first minute of injury that Lee did well do save while seconds later he had another chance to win the game for Saudi, only to hit the side netting. -

Korean performance pleases Verbeek

JAKARTA – Korea Republic coach Pim Verbeek was satisfied with his team’s performance despite seeing Saudi Arabia come back from going a goal behind to earn a draw in their AFC Asian Cup opener.
Choi Sung-kuk had given the Koreans the lead with a header in the 66th minute only for Yasser Al Qahtani to equalise from the penalty spot 11 minutes later as the two Group D favourites shared the spoils.
“We had a nervous start and for the first 15 minutes the Saudis were the better team,” said the Dutchman. “But after that we got control of the game and in the second half we were the better team and scored a very good goal.
“We had more chances and I think with the penalty, the goal we gave away, was an unlucky moment in the organisation of the back line.
“Overall, though, I was pleased with the performance of my players against a very strong team like Saudi Arabia.
“Of course, I wanted to win like any coach or any player but I have to admit that a draw was the best result for both teams.”
The Koreans looked to be in control of the game and heading for their first win in a competitive game over the Saudis in 18 years when Australian referee Mark Shield awarded the Arab side a penalty after contact between Malek Maaz and Oh Beom-seok.
VerbeekÂ’s players protested the decision before Al Qahtani sent Lee Woon-jae the wrong way in the Korean goal and the 51-year-old refused to be drawn into a debate over the legitimacy of the decision.
“I couldn’t see it,” he said. “I was 70 metres away so I had no idea if it was a penalty or not. But it’s not up to me to say anything about the referee. He makes the decision and it’s done. If it was not a penalty there’s nothing I can do about it.”
A power outage five minutes from the end of the game stopped play for almost 25 minutes and upon the resumption the Saudis almost scored the winner when Saad Al Harthi hit the side netting with just seconds remaining.
That, though, would have been rough justice on a Korean side that controlled much of the game. However, Verbeek was impressed by the Saudis, who were playing their first competitive game under coach Helio Anjos.
“They’re a strong team, very skilful and also good in defence and very well organised,” he said. “We didn’t create so many chances but still, I think we did very well against what I think is one of the best teams in this tournament.” -
Looks like Iran survived the hardest test in the group to stay on course.S.Korea and Saudi Arabia must continue to do what they came for to finish one two in their group.Todays game will determine if Vietnam's first victory was a fluke and Thailand must find the goals to stay afloat.

Ninja, I'm referring to the penalty awarded to Saudi Arabia.
Even the commentators don't think it was a penalty.
Oh Beom Seok (pronounce like Bomb Sock actually) didn't actually pushed the Saudi forward.
Well, it's been given. No choice but to accept. 1-1, at least Korea didn't lose even if they didn't manage to win.
