Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon says all efforts are being made to help strengthen Jose Mourinho's squad.
The former Manchester United executive was trying to defuse ongoing reports of dissension in the ranks at Stamford Bridge.
Recent reports have suggested that Mourinho has fallen out with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich regarding the club's transfer policy and the summer arrival of Andrei Shevchenko.
Kenyon insisted every avenue was being explored to bring in new faces this month, but stated that short-term solutions are not what the club are looking for.
"There are a couple of names whose clubs we have contacted and if we can get one of them in, we'd be delighted," Kenyon told the Daily Express.
"But there are a myriad of reasons why they may not. January is a notoriously difficult time. They may not be available or they may be cup-tied.
"We embarked this year on investing significant amounts of money again in the belief the squad would take us through to achieve the ambitions of the manager.
"We are not bringing in a player who may or may not by there for three months of the season.
"Any player we bring in has to form part of the squad for next season. That reduces the options.
"We are not about throwing money at a short-term problem."
Kenyon also stated that Mourinho was made well aware of Shevchenko's arrival in the summer.
"There isn't a single player at Chelsea who Jose has not been party to bringing in," he added.
"We would never buy a player and enforce him on our coach.
"It is nonsense to suggest Chelsea would bring players to the club that the manager does not want."
Chelsea will aim to reach the Carling Cup final when they host League Two side Wycombe Wanderers in their semi-final, second leg, which is live on Sky Sports 1 on Tuesday evening.
