Sky Sports News understand Phil Parkinson will become Alan Pardew's assistant manager at Charlton Athletic on Friday.
Parkinson has been out of football for the past month after being sacked as manager of Championship strugglers Hull City.
He had only been in the post since the summer after leaving Colchester United for the ambitious Tigers.
During his time at Colchester, Parkinson had cultivated a reputation as one of the brightest young managers in the English game.
It now appears he will have the chance to redeem that tag at The Valley after being summoned to help Charlton's Premiership survival bid.
Parkinson knows Pardew well, having played under the Addicks chief during their time together at Reading.
Pardew, fresh from being cleared of an FA charge of improper conduct, is expected to confirm Parkinson's appointment on Friday morning.

Hmmm. Maybe this time round, Pardew not fail again as he got his pal as his assistant. Trust me, they (Pardew and his assistant) will succeed at Charlton.

Addicks confirm Parky arrival
Charlton have named Phil Parkinson as assistant to Alan Pardew.
The former Hull boss was widely mooted to be making the move to The Valley and now Charlton have confirmed Parkinson will join the club until the end of the season.
Parkinson worked with Pardew when they were at Reading together and the former Colchester boss is excited at the prospect of working again with Pardew.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am really looking forward to working with Alan Pardew, for whom I have the utmost respect," Parkinson told the club's official website.
"With the right level of commitment and application by everyone connected with the club, I believe we can stay up this season.
"All my energies will be focused on that objective."
Pardew was delighted to install Parkinson as his assistant.
"While Phil is in between jobs I have taken the opportunity to bring him here until the end of the season because I know he can make a difference in terms of his knowledge and his passion to try and keep us in the Premier League," said Pardew.
Mark Robson and Mark Kinsella will remain on the coaching staff as first-team coach and reserve-team coach respectively.
