David Gill has not ruled out a move for Owen Hargreaves, but has revealed that Manchester United do not plan to 'do a great deal' of spending in January.
United were frustrated in their attempts to sign Hargreaves during the summer as Bayern Munich refused to let him leave.
The midfielder has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford, and United have been linked with a move for him this month as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to maintain his side's title push.
However, chief executive Gill has refused to be drawn into a definite answer, telling Manchester United Radio: "I think we all know the area in which we want to strengthen, but I'm not going to comment on that."
Gill insists there are funds available, but doubts how much more business the club will do until the end of the season following the capture of Henrik Larsson on loan.
"The money is there but traditionally we do most of our big spending in the summer and I think that will continue," he explained.
"Things may change. If there's an area in which we want to do something then we'll do it, but at the moment we don't plan to do a great deal.
"We've already brought in Henrik Larsson, while a number of the players who have been out on loan are also back at the club."
