Wenger talks down Bale bid
Arsene Wenger has played down talk of a bid for Gareth Bale, insisting he is well stocked at left-back.
Arsenal have been linked with a £10million bid for the Southampton man in the January transfer window.
However, Wenger believes with Gael Clichy and Armand Traore at his disposal, he has sufficient numbers in the position.
"I like the player but as you know we have two left-backs here," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.
The Gunners currently have a number of players on the treatment table, including key first-teamers such as William Gallas and Robin van Persie.
But Wenger is not too concerned, with the likes of Jeremie Aliadiere and Julio Baptista set to ease the worries.
"We have players like Aliadiere and Baptista who get more chances to play and we have [Freddie] Ljungberg who will come back now and I hope it will be enough," he said.
Arsenal's next opponents are Bolton in the FA Cup on Sunday, with Wenger set to name a strong team for the visit of Sam Allardyce's side.
Wenger has set his sights firmly on going all the way in this year's competition as the final returns to Wembley for the first time since 2000.
He added: "On Sunday it will be close to a Premier League side because we played a very hard game in the Carling Cup.
"To be at home in the cup is a minor advantage but still we want to win at the end.
"We want to be one of the first to be at Wembley but I feel at the moment what is important for us is to keep our winning run. Bolton are one of the contenders but it is down to us to stop them." -
Wenger: Aliadiere will stay
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Jeremie Aliadiere will not be leaving Arsenal in January following an injury to Robin van Persie.
Aliadiere had been linked with a potential exit from Emirates Stadium but Wenger will not sanction the French striker's departure, as van Persie is expected to be on the sidelines for up to ten weeks with a broken metatarsal.
Arsenal's second-longest serving player had attracted interest from Middlesbrough, St Etienne and Sochaux and could have conceivably ended his injury-ravaged spell in North London.
However, Wenger is now looking for Aliadiere, and Carling Cup hero Julio Baptista, to make a significant contribution in van Persie's absence.
"I did not want to let him go anyway, and I believe it is a good opportunity for him and someone like Julio Baptista to show how good they are," said Wenger.
"I believe that he will come through with some goals until the end of the season."
One player who could be leaving North London is young midfielder Alex Song, with French club Sochaux reportedly keen on taking the Cameroon youngster on loan.
Now, Wenger has admitted he will allow Song to leave The Gunners, as he has a number of options in his engine room.
"The only one to go out could be Song because I want him to play somewhere," Wenger added.
"Diaby is back and Denilson has shown that he is ready to play so, in central midfield, we are a bit congested with Flamini, Denilson, Diaby, Fabregas and Gilberto."
Meanwhile, the Gunners boss has insisted he is not concerned with a recent slump in Theo Walcott's form - with England's youngest ever player still waiting for his first Arsenal goal.
"I think he had developed very well, but recently he had a little dip in form," he added.
"He is certainly miles better than six months ago.
"I feel at the moment he needs a goal or a shot of confidence because for me he looks a bit short of confidence right now. I think you necessarily go through that period when you are 17." -
Wenger: Trotters have style
Arsene Wenger has insisted there is much more to Bolton Wanderers than a direct style and a robust physical approach ahead of the FA Cup fourth round meeting of the two sides on Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1.
In many of the recent meetings between the two sides, Bolton have been painted as the Beast to Arsenal's Beauty, but Wenger insists that aesthetic pleasures are not anathema to Sam Allardyce's footballing philosophy.
The two managers are hardly the closest of friends, having had a number of disagreements over the years, but the Frenchman has offered some generous praise to his rival by stating that The Trotters are unfairly characterised as long-ball merchants - a complaint Allardyce has made many times in the past.
Bolton have lost only once in their last seven games against The Gunners and Wenger is under no illusions about the size of his team's task at The Emirates Stadium in the third successive year that the two sides have met in the FA Cup.
"They are always a good character test - but they are a good side as well. People sometimes forget that," said Wenger.
"Okay, they might have minimal resources, but they have people like Nicolas Anelka and El-Hadji Diouf - they are not minimal resource players.
"Bolton can play. You cannot say that (Gary) Speed is not a football player. Nor (Ivan) Campo, or (Kevin) Nolan, or Anelka, or Diouf. They are football players - good football players.
"Chelsea wanted (Tal) Ban Haim - it is not just because he can kick the ball, it is because he is a good football player. That is why they get results."
The Gunners lost 3-1 at The Reebok Stadium in the Premiership in November, but Wenger is sure that his team have the necessary spirit and character to avoid a repeat result on home turf.
"We have not had the best of games every time we got up there to Bolton, but we were a bit unlucky this season," he added.
"They scored two amazing goals and we had the best part of the game.
"Maybe one or two years ago, we were not ready to face this type of opponent, but the team has improved a lot on this side." -
Wenger ready to rest Cesc
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he is considering giving Cesc Fabregas a rest.
Fabregas has been an ever-present in the Premiership and UEFA Champions League this season and the Spaniard has played in the last two Carling Cup games.
The 19-year-old insists he does not want a rest, as he is keen to continue playing.
However, Wenger is keen to protect his star midfielder and is ready to take him out of the firing line against Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
"I do not know whether Cesc will play or not yet," said Wenger.
"He will be on the bench or in the team.
"But I am tempted to count one game out for him, either on Sunday or Wednesday."
Meanwhile, Wenger has admitted Julio Baptista is doing his chances of winning a permanent move to The Emirates Stadium no harm at all.
The Brazilian has struggled to hold down a regular place in Wenger's side in the Premiership, but he has impressed in Arsenal's Carling Cup run.
Baptista followed up his four-goal haul against Liverpool in the quarter-finals with both goals in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in midweek and Wenger believes he is now adapting to life in England.
"What he is achieving will help to make my mind up," said Baptista.
"He scored four at Liverpool, two at Tottenham - you could do worse.
"It took him time to adapt, but it is amazing - suddenly 'boom' one goal is in.
"That is him. He has a little bit of the qualities which [Robert] Pires had, to turn up in the box - and always you need these kinds of players." -
Davies disappointed with Arsenal
Kevin Davies hopes to give Arsene Wenger and his Arsenal players more to moan about by knocking them out of the FA Cup.
Bolton face The Gunners in the competition for a third successive season at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Sam Allardyce's side enjoy an excellent recent record against Arsenal, having lost just once in the last seven meetings between the sides.
However, Davies feels Wenger and his players do not take defeat gracefully, something Bolton thrive on.
"We've obviously got a secret because we know how to beat them. Some people say we do it unfairly and then every time we play them they claim that they are more prepared for us," Davies said in the Daily Star.
"Yet we beat them fair and square 3-1 here in November. We hear and read what they say about us and we use it to inspire us when we play them.
"All the articles are pinned up on the wall before the game. You can sense their players do not enjoy playing against us. We use that as an advantage.
"It's not that we go in there and shove them about. But that's what we always get labelled with doing."
Davies reckons Arsenal will be looking to give Bolton 'a good hiding' at the weekend, but says The Trotters are determined to go all the way in the FA Cup this season.
The striker added: "I think Arsenal are going to be wound up for this tie and will want to give us a good hiding.
"I had a feeling before the draw we were going to get paired with Arsenal again so it was no great surprise to me.
"We feel we can beat them. We've responded well in training this week. To win the FA Cup is obviously a dream for any player.
"I'd take winning the FA Cup this year and getting into the Champions League next season." -
Gallas: We're better than Chelsea
William Gallas has issued a barbed comment in the direction of his former manager Jose Mourinho, claiming the Portuguese tactician is the man responsible for Chelsea's recent troubles.
While from the outside there appears to be little wrong in West London, speculation is rife that internal wranglings are dividing the club and its management.
It is though on-the-field concerns that are of interest to Gallas, with the club's current defensive problems coming as no surprise to the Arsenal defender.
Gallas was sold in the summer as part of the deal which took Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge and in his absence, the Frenchman believes Chelsea are paying the consequences.
"They are paying for it now - they are short of a defender," he told the News of the World.
"But I don't want to pay attention to what they are doing anymore.
"It was painful to leave at the time, but there was a big lack of respect for me from certain people inside Chelsea.
"I put in 100 per cent for five years. Now I have turned the page.
"Arsenal is all that matters. It was a huge moment to beat Man United last week. It was clear Arsenal are better than Chelsea.
"Now we are feel we are back in the title fight, we really believe it." -
Wenger considers 'panic buy'
Arsene Wenger admits he may be forced into a 'panic buy', as injuries continue to mount up for Arsenal.
Julio Baptista is the latest player to be added to the casualty list after the forward picked up a groin injury after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup draw with Bolton.
With fellow frontman Robin van Persie potentially out for the rest of the season with a broken foot and a number of other first team players struggling, Arsenal may have to make a move prior to Wednesday's transfer deadline.
Asked whether the situation could force his hand in the transfer market, the Arsenal manager said: "That is a good question. I cannot give you an answer. I do not think so.
"We have lost now van Persie, and will see what Baptista has."
Wenger accepted: "I would see that as a panic buy because it was not planned." -
Silva: Not my best season
Gilberto Silva insists his current run of goalscoring form does not constitute his best season at Arsenal.
The Brazilian anchorman, who was made captain during the absence of Thierry Henry, has found the net eight times this season.
Silva's unlikely exploits have caught the headlines, but the player is adamant he remains far more than a goalscoring midfielder.
"People are saying this is my best year here, but I disagree," Silva told the Guardian.
"I've been playing consistently well for five years. The difference in the last few months is that I've been captain in the absence of Thierry, been the penalty-taker and scored many goals which isn't usual for me.
"This was the difference and this is the reason people have been talking about me.
"I'm very happy with what I've done, but it's not just down to me. It's down to the team and what we have done together. My job is to protect the defenders, but when I have a chance to score I feel proud.
"If the goals come they're welcome, but it's not what I look to do. I just want to do my best for the team." -
Gunners receive Beast boost
Arsenal have confirmed that Julio Baptista's groin injury is not as serious as first feared, a development that is likely to end any talk of Arsene Wenger entering the transfer market before Wednesday's deadline.
The Gunners boss had hinted that he could be forced into a 'panic buy' after his on-loan Brazilian forward picked up an injury in the 1-1 FA Cup draw against Bolton on Sunday.
Coupled with Robin van Persie's broken metatarsal, the injury to Baptista may have convinced the Frenchman that he needed to break his vow not to bring in any new faces in January.
However The Gunners have now revealed that Baptista has only suffered a minor blow and could even be in contention for the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final against Tottenham on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports 1.
'The Beast' will now undergo intensive treatment in a bid to be fit for the cup clash, and his presence would certainly be a major psychological boost for Wenger with the Brazilian international scoring six goals in the competition this season. -
Gunners strike Sunu deal
Arsenal are believed to have brokered a deal for Chateauroux's teenage striker Gilles Sunu.
The 15-year-old is expected to move to Emirates Stadium at the end of the current campaign after agreeing to continue his education under Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners boss has had considerable success in recruiting young hopefuls from his homeland, with Nicolas Anelka and Gael Clichy testament to his keen eye for talent.
Now Arsenal will be hoping that Sunu will be the latest teenager to make a name for himself in North London.
Skysports.com revealed in December that the Ligue 2 side were set for talks with The Gunners regarding Sunu, and it is believed that negotiations are now on the brink of completion.
Liverpool had also been linked with Sunu but the teenage forward will be plying his trade in North London come the summer, with the move likely to confirmed in March when the striker turns 16. -
Gunners book Chelsea date
Arsenal set up a heavyweight Carling Cup final clash with Chelsea but needed extra-time to see off Spurs.
Mido's late equaliser which cancelled out Emmanuel Adebayor's opener sent the tie into an extra half-an-hour but Jeremie Aliadiere's strike followed by a Pascal Chimbonda own goal put the result beyond doubt.
In spite of Spurs' endeavours, it was hard to deny the Gunners youngsters deserved their place in Cardiff after dominating both games for long periods.
But it took the introduction of Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky to provide the vital ingredient to see off the visitors' challenge.
England winger Aaron Lennon was left on the bench for Tottenham due to illness with Martin Jol opting for Steed Malbranque and Hossam Ghaly on the flanks.
But midway through the first half it became apparent confusion over the original teamsheet meant Lennon could not play any part, leaving Spurs with just four substitutes.
Jol started with Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe in attack, with Egypt striker Mido on the bench.
Keane had a great opportunity after 10 minutes. The Irish international broke the Arsenal offside trap and latched onto Michael Dawson's long through ball but Almunia was off his line quickly to smother
Three minutes later, Kolo Toure missed a golden chance to put the hosts ahead. Denilson's shot was fumbled by Paul Robinson into the path of the onrushing Toure but his instinctive prod went wide of the upright.
Adebayor and Jeremie Aliadiere both missed the target when well placed as Arsenal looked to gain the upper hand.
At the other end, Malbranque met Ghaly's cross with a firm header that skipped off the turf but narrowly wide of Almunia's right-hand post.
There was an early flashpoint as the second half got underway. Ghaly and Abou Diaby went down in a heap in the penalty area and scuffled as they got to their feet. A number of players ran in to intervene before referee Alan Whiley pulled out yellow cards for both the Spurs winger and the Gunners midfielder.
As the game continued, Walcott appeared the hosts' best outlet but time and again the teenager failed to take the right option when well placed.
And with 62 minutes gone, the 17-year-old was replaced by Rosicky with Arsene Wenger looking for a bit more quality in the final third.
Before Walcott had left the pitch, the Gunners were forced into another change when defender Armand Traore went down injured, Gael Clichy taking his place at left-back.
The addition of the Czech international and the French youngster gave Wenger's men fresh impetus. Denilson, a threat throughout, cut in from the left and fired a shot into the side-netting while Rosicky created mayhem on the opposite flank, forcing Chimbonda to bring him down at the expense of a yellow card.
It was no surprise that Rosicky was involved in the opening goal. His powerful shot was parried by Robinson but the Spurs defence failed to clear their lines. The ball broke again for the Czech midfielder who played in Adebayor to slot past the visting keeper with ease.
As Adebayor celebrated with Thierry Henry, who was not even in the squad for the game, Arsenal brought on Cesc Fabregas to try and seal the tie. The visitors responded and replaced Malbranque and Ghaly with Mido and Tom Huddlestone.
And just as Rosicky's introduction had an immediate impact, so did the appearance of the Egyptian target man. Denilson commited a foul out on the left and Mido rose to nod home Jermaine Jenas' perfect free-kick.
Mido almost sent Spurs to the final in injury time but his left foot shot curled agonisingly wide of Almunia's right-hand post.
Deep into added time, Denilson nearly sent Arsenal to Cardiff only to be denied by Robinson who also reacted quickly to parry Toure's effort.
With Spurs needing to score in extra-time to have any chance of progressing to the final, the first period saw the hosts continue to dominate possession.
And right at the end of the first 15 minutes, Spurs substitute Ricardo Rocha made a hash of an attempted clearance, allowing Aliadiere to fire into the roof of the net to send the Gunners to Cardiff.
The inspirational Rosicky put the tie beyond doubt with eight minutes of added time remaining, weaving his magic in the Spurs penalty area before firing against a post only to see the rebound deflect off Chimbonda and just over the line. -
Tomas: No doubting young guns
Tomas Rosicky sees no reason why the club's youngsters cannot go on and beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup final.
An inexperienced Gunners side overcame Tottenham 3-1 after extra-time to book a trip to Cardiff.
Rosicky, who inspired Arsenal after coming on as a 63rd-minute substitute, told Sky Sports: "I think it is fantastic for this young side. These boys are improving every day.
"They have won at Anfield and showed it again today, so why not?"
The competition is the only one to so far have eluded manager Arsene Wenger but the Frenchman insisted he would continue with his policy of selecting youngsters.
He said: "Our young side has improved a lot. They have shown quality and mental strength.
"Tonight when Spurs came back to 1-1 we needed to be mentally strong. We wobbled for a few minutes but in extra time it was all us.
"I will play the right mixture of all the players involved until now. These boys played so well I want to give them the chance." -
Almunia thrilled to make final
Manuel Almunia is relishing the prospect of playing in the Carling Cup final following Arsenal's victory over Tottenham in the last four.
After coming from behind to hold Spurs 2-2 at White Hart Lane, The Gunners won 3-1 at home in extra-time.
Almunia has played a key role in Arsenal's march to the final, with Arsene Wenger using the competition to blood youngsters and fringe players.
"I am happy because in this cup Arsenal are demonstrating their level with young players. This is very important," Almunia told skysports.com.
"The matches against Tottenham were complicated. It was a bad moment at 1-1 at the Emirates but we reacted and won the game in extra-time.
"Wenger was very happy after the match and congratulated us."
Arsenal take on Chelsea in the final on February 25 and Almunia feels his side can go to the Millennium Stadium with a lot of confidence.
"A final against The Blues will always be very special for Arsenal," he explained.
"This is the first trophy of the season and the kids are very excited about winning in Cardiff.
"Are Chelsea favourites in the final? No. In any final both clubs have a 50 per cent chance.
Almunia added: "Personally I am satisfied with my work for the team. Every day I fight for a place in the eleven but the decision lies with the coach." -
Adebayor backs young stars
Emmanuel Adebayor believes Arsenal's young Gunners can go all the way and defeat Chelsea in next month's Carling Cup final.
Arsene Wenger maintained his policy of selecting a number of his up and coming stars as Arsenal booked their place with an extra-time semi-final win over Tottenham on Wednesday.
Wenger insists he is prepared to stand by the players who have seen the team through to Cardiff.
And Adebayor, one of the more experienced stars on show against Spurs and a goalscorer on Wednesday night, believes Wenger's alternative line up can get the better of the Premiership champions.
"Of course, there is an even greater satisfaction that we have done it with young players. Now I hope we are going to win it," said Adebayor.
"If you can beat Liverpool at their home ground then Tottenham as well, we have a good chance to win it.
"We are going to give our best.
"The young boys, we have played them in the Premiership and when we have had to win, they have done it.
"It does not matter about their age. We have a lot of quality.
"I do not know what the manager has in his mind. I think he will try to put the young boys in because they have done the job up to now. It would be difficult for them not play the final.
"The boss has confidence in the young players and we have confidence in them as well." -
Wenger unsure over Lehmann
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he is unsure if Jens Lehmann will stay at the club.
Lehmann's current contract expires in the summer and he could leave on a free transfer.
A number of German and Spanish clubs are thought to be monitoring Lehmann's future at Arsenal.
Wenger is keen to keep Lehmann, but insists he will no change his policy of offering just a one-year extension to his older players.
"I had a little meeting with him. At the moment, we have to sit down again to decide about that [contract]," said Lehmann.
"Ideally, I would like him to stay.
"But I do not know yet. You have to wait.
"He will not get more than one year.
"What can change is somebody can offer him three years.
"What we talk about is between him and me, but we have not really sat down yet and spoken about a contract.
"We spoke about how the year went, what I expect of him for the rest of the season and we will speak about a contract in a few weeks."
Wenger admitted it was a risk to let Lehmann's contract run down, but he is not worried that speculation over his future will affect the German.
"That is a risk I take," added Wenger.
"I would like to settle it before [the summer] but, if he says he is going to leave, that will not affect him."
Wenger also revealed that Manuel Almunia is pushing Lehmann for a place in the first-team after impressing in the cup games this season.
"Manuel is pushing, but Lehmann is doing extremely well also - that is why he will come back [against Middlesbrough]," added Wenger.
"If you play somebody who is good it puts the main player under pressure. Lehmann can deal with that.
"I have complete confidence in Almunia if I need to play him in any competition." -
Wenger happy with Gallas
Arsene Wenger is hopeful William Gallas will return to fitness in around a fortnight, but is not prepared to rush his star defender back into action.
The Arsenal defender has been sidelined since November with a thigh complaint and he has met with repeated setbacks when attempting to step up his workload.
Wenger, though, claims Gallas is now training well again and is hopeful of including him in his plans in the near future.
"We rushed him back every time and he had one or two setbacks, but now we are relaxed about it and we don't set any time at all," Wenger told Sky Sports News. "He will be back soon.
"The good thing is he is progressing well, but to say he will be back next week, certainly not.
"In two weeks, maybe."
The Gunners are 15 points adrift of Manchester United in the title race, but Wenger is refusing to throw in the towel.
"We still believe we have a little chance and we want to show that in every game we are ready to fight. We just want to go for it until the end," added the French tactician. -
Pires hits out at Wenger
Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires has claimed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's decision to replace him in last year's UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona was the low point of his career.
The ex-Gunner was delighted to be named in the starting XI for the showpiece event, but was the casualty for Jens Lehmann's dismissal after being replaced by Manuel Almunia.
Pires does not believe he should have been the one to go off and believes Wenger's choice to take him out of the action was a joke.
"I was in seventh heaven when I knew I would be in the starting XI for the CL final," he told L'Equipe.
"During the match when I saw the referee showing number seven, frankly I thought it was a joke.
"I could never imagine Arsene would replace me. Honestly, I would have named another player, with good reasons.
"I'll never say who. That event remains the worst moment of my career.
"It's worse than my fall-out with Raymond Domenech. Worse than my first damaged ligaments in 2002 and worse than my second four years later.
"2006, what an awful year! I even imagined giving up everything." -

last night, after watching 20 minutes, i went to sleep.. i figured they are not playing well and would probably draw or lose..

Ten-man Gunners grab point
Ten-man Arsenal came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at The Riverside.
After a fairly lifeless opening hour the game came to life on the hour when Boro won a penalty through Yakubu Aiyegbeni. Philippe Senderos was also sent off for tripping the Nigerian, who dispatched the spot-kick with great aplomb.
Despite being a man down Arsenal always looked capable of getting something from the game and indeed they did as a swift counter-attack from one back to the other saw Thierry Henry fire home to secure a point.
Middlesbrough had began the game brightly with Stewart Downing giving Justin Hoyte a number of problems on the left.
The only real chance, though, to come from Downing in the opening ten minutes was when Lee Cattermole but his header was well defended by Gael Clichy at the back post.
Arsenal were soon into their stride and the passing flowing football followed, but like Boro before them the chances were hard to come by.
Kolo Toure almost got on the end of a Thierry Henry free kick before Tomas Rosicky was unlucky to see his sliced effort fly just wide of the post.
The best move of the half saw Arsenal string a host of passes together before Henry picked up the ball on the edge of the box - but the Frenchman's archetypal curler into the corner could only find Brad Jones.
Like with the first half Boro were by far the brighter, with James Morrison - a half time replacement for the injured Cattermole - given extra width on the right.
Just minutes in and Toure was fortunate to avoid punishment as he handled the ball as Viduka could have been clear - but the Australian still got the ball only to volley wide from the edge of the box.
On the hour and the game erupted into life as Boro took the lead. A long ball from the back saw Viduka beat Toure in the air to flick the ball into the path of Yakubu - who raced into the box but went down under the challenge of Senderos.
Mike Riley had little hesitation in pointing to the spot and issuing Senderos with his second red card of the season. Yakubu slotted home from 12 yards in trademark fashion, sending Jens Lehmann - who was booked for his protests - the wrong way.
Arsenal immediately reorganised with Gilberto dropping to centre-half, but Boro were very much in the ascendancy.
Julio Arca was put through by Morrison but he dallied in the box and the chance was wasted, then Downing was denied by a good challenge from Hoyte as Boateng's cross found him on the edge of the six-yard box.
Lehmann was then at the heart of Arsenal's reply. He firstly pulled of a world-class save from Viduka as the Australian turned wonderfully on the edge of the box. From the corner the German rushed to the edge of the box - only just making sure he stayed inside.
