You can easily get a mountain bike below $200 from carrefour. I got mine for around $170.
A difficult hard to last 5 years unless you really maintain it well (ie, no rust, no puncture, etc).
if yoru budget is higher, there wld be more variations to consider, but since u only have3 200 to spare, there is almost no diff whatever you choose, cos they are basically the same crap ;]
nonetheless, u shld get road tyres 3*8 (24) gears, mtb. i think road bikes are really for pros.
reason 24 geear is because , for me, i always find the highest gear of 21 too slow for me XD.

hmm. .
sorry for stereotyping bah. . .
so hu wanna buy my haro?
Its hard to get a decent bike that is below $200.
Decent bikes below $200 only reminds me of URATA.
Even decent low-end ones like HASA or Raleigh (1st hand) cost about 280.
Upgrade ur budget to 300. 500 is best.
Oh, and being an experienced rider, i know the bike u're gonna get has max 21 gears only. 3 x 7 since its a bike below $200.
Best riding gear ratio for me is 2 -5. Easy to cycle, and provides decent speed. 2 -6 is fine. If u're on the road. 3-4 or 3-5 is fine.
Also since u are just using it for regular stuff, u can leave the tires alone and just use the stock ones.
Or you can invest in about $60 or so for a better tyre, probably one thats semi-slick. 1.5" width will be fine.
Those from carrefour are overpriced. Seriously. EXTREMELY overpriced. Ask around and you will be surprised how crappy that place is.
Of course if you are really keen in getting a proper bike or something thats worth of slightly higher value and want ur value for money, theres a website thats dedicated to bikers.
http://www.togoparts.com
Great site although most discussions are about high end bikes in the thousands $ range. But check out the marketplace, everyday there will be lots of people selling bikes at almost 1/2 price. And best part, its from Singapore!
Another thing.
BMX aint good for commuting. U'd probably die on the way to school although i think it looks pretty ok for short distances. But for tpy to amk, a mountain bike would be much better.
Skip the road bikes unless u have a helmet and some real skills on the road cos if u're riding on the pavements, u'd probably be damn it worried about the drain grills on the pavements u have to avoid.

lol yeah. Hey today I went to the bike shop and they had a nice MTB with front suspension (hardtail right?) for $160. Is hardtail good? Someone once said full suspension is shaky.
When you straddle your bike, there should be a clearance of a few inches from crotch to bike frame.
Else it would be a damn painful experience if something happens.
