DonÂ’t yawn causeÂ’ the box of goodies does go around on this Hill. This yearÂ’s Star Awards send a few new faces into the popularity radar. The heat is definitely on.

ItÂ’s the name list that weÂ’ve all been waiting for.
As you read off the who’s-who on this year’s Top 10 Most Popular Male & Female Artistes and Best Newcomer nomination list, the nominated stars would already be at The Oriental Singapore (the venue for this year's Star Awards press conference to announce the nominees) sipping coffee and tucking into finger food while regaling journos with tales of ‘what if they win an award’.
Already, there is one celebrity who will be preparing her thank-you speech. She is none other than perenial favourite of Singaporeans young and old Chen Liping who will receive the All-Time Favourites award this year. For the unitiated, this is an award given to artistes who have made it to the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes list for the past 10 years.
They would also have randomly picked out their voting numbers – those lucky numbers which you would be frantically dialing from Oct 17 when the voting lines open.
So who are the new faces this year to look out for?
Project SuperStar champion Kelvin Tan Weilian whose debut album shot to platinum status when it was first launched in January this year would be a strong contender for the Best Newcomer award with his strong fan base both in Singapore and Malaysia. His fans would no doubt be doubly busy given that he is also nominated in the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste category.
Fellow Project SuperStar finalist Chew Sin Huey who will soon be seen hosting Channel U new outdoor variety gameshow The 7-Eleven Gameshow joins him with two noms in both the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste and the Best Newcomer categories.
Both Kelvin and Sin Huey were earlier seen smooching each other as a pair of bickering lovers in Channel UÂ’s idol drama Dream Chasers.
The popularity of Channel U’s first reality talent show Project SuperStar cannot be disputed with SuperStars from Season One filling up three out of five spots in the Best Newcomer award category. Apart from Kelvin and Sin Huey, sweet-faced Candyce Toh is the other SuperStar finalist to be nominated. The other two spots are taken up by drool-worthy young idols Elvin Ng who was last seen in idol drama Love At 0° C and Dawn Yeo who made an impression in her debut drama as a visually-handicapped girl in The Shining Star.
On the Most Popular Male and Female Artistes front, last yearÂ’s Best Newcomer award recipient Jesseca Liu now moves up into the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes rungs as a nominee. The Malaysia-born actress last showed that she can hold her own against the big boys Li Nanxing and Christopher Lee in Channel 8 drama Through It All.
Julian Hee who was nominated last year for Best Newcomer is also nominated for Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste. Would he have better luck (and fans) this time round?
Priscelia Chan who was left out of the cold last year is in the running this year for Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes. But with little to show for except for English comedy My Sassy Neighbour 2 which is currently showing on Channel 5, will her fans remember to vote?
Will the usual suspects go home triumphant or will the new faces turn in some upsets?
It all rests on YOUR VOTE. So whatÂ’s a good fan to do? Start saving up now, oil those fingers and get ready to start punching those numbers to support your faves when the voting lines open on Oct 17!
