“Chinese Melodies in Symphony” is presented by The Xi' an Conservatory of Music who has always been active in developing musical talents and promoting cultural exchanges and is one of the top music conservatories in China.
The conservatory has enhanced the erhu by employing modern principles of acoustics. The symphonic erhu, known as qinhu, was unveiled in 2003 at the Beijing International Exhibition Centre, arousing widespread international interest. Its development has inspired musicians in their creative endeavors by expanding the expressive space for Chinese music, while presenting audiences with a refreshing and modern musical experience.
The 120-strong Orchestra will be performing both new creations and traditional music at the Esplanade Concert Hall from 2-4 May 2008, bringing the innovative sounds of the qinhu to audiences in Singapore for the first time in their concert series entitled “Chinese Melodies in Symphony”.
The Orchestra will be presenting three distinctive program lineups for each of their three nights in Singapore.
For the inaugural night, the Orchestra will regale audiences with music from their 2005 concert at the Vienna Musikverein in the Goldener Saal, including a rendition of “The Jubilant Yellow Earth” by renowned suona performer Yang Hui Qing. Other musical pieces include “Lights of Dawn” by qinhu soloist Niu Miao Miao; “Yellow River Piano Concerto” by pianist Jiang Zhi Hua; “Rise Up Terracotta Warriors” and duet “Libimo ne’lirti calici”. Ms Chang Pei-yu, Professor of Xi'an Conservatory of Music and Conductor of Oriental National Symphony Orchestra,will conduct at the first night.
For the second night performance on 3 May 2008, the concert will be conducted by MAJOR (RET) Tay Soon Huat from the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company and prominent composer Zhou Yu Guo from Xi’an Conservatory of Music for the first half and second half performances respectively. The program will include the “Lion City Overture”, ”The Butterfly Lovers” by 19-year-old prodigy violinist Yang Zhao Ci, as well as erhu soloist Zhang Bin, zhongruan soloist Ding Xiao Yan, tenor Wu Jie and guzheng soloist Yin Qun. Wu Jie, Ding Xiao Yan, Zhang Bin and Yin Qun are professional musician and vocalist, who are residing in Singapore.
The third and final matinee performance will feature young talents from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, with Zhou Yu Guo as the conductor. The performance will feature a new orchestral piece “New Beginnings” by young composer Chew Jun An. Nine-year-old child prodigy Wang Hai Rou will perform “Drums in Fragrant Hill” on the guzheng, while twin sisters Tan Su Min and Tan Su Hui will play a rearranged “Yue Qin Zan ” for duet zhongruan. The concert will also feature Chew Jun Ru performing an erhu concerto “The Story of Lan Hua Hua”, and Wong De Li for suona solo “Yellow Earth”.
