  Young piano talents Pan Yi An and Jonathan Lim launch another brilliant SSO season in a marvellously varied programme. Shostakovich wrote his second piano concerto in 1957 as a birthday gift for his 19-year-old pianist son Maxim: a work full of light-hearted energy that probably owes as much to the composer's relief at the demise of Stalin as to his cheerful wishes for his son. The beautiful yet melancholic world of Symphony No. 6, with its sense of intense internal struggle, features in its opening movement one of the loveliest themes ever written by Tchaikovsky.

  This Sunday, the Singapore Wind Symphony goes animals!
  
  In their repertoire, that is. This will be a fun mix of soundtracks, songs from musicals and familiar favourites about... animals! Pieces from Jurassic Park, The Jungle Book and Lion King will delight both the young and young-at-heart.
  
  Since its establishment in 1992 as a spin-off from the National Theatre Symphonic Band, the Singapore Wind Symphony has performed around the world and garnered awards for its superb performances.
