Yup, the same way any exercise will stress your muscles. Did you think that a bicep curl doesn't stress the...gosh...bicep?Originally posted by purez:almost all compound exercises will stress the spine 1 la..
it's not a myth. my friend's doctor told him to stop weights training because it stunted his growth and now hes a short mofoOriginally posted by OPT:I have been asked to debunk this myth - and yes it is a myth - I have 5 year olds performing strength exercises.
It is completely safe, in fact recommended that children of all ages should perform strength training.
I will pull the actual research together and post it here latter.
i'm not sure what kind but the doctor was a specialist. happened to 2 of my friends. both different doctors.Originally posted by galapogos:Sadly most doctors don't know much about training. What kind of doctor told him that weightlifting is the cause of his stunted growth?

Well the doctors may be wrong but I doubt it because both of those friends are really really short.Originally posted by galapogos:Well, doctors are also humans. Not all of them bother to read up on research. Many of them also subscribe to myths and/or do stupid stuff. For example my physiotherapist at CGH actually has me on an exercise bike to warmup for 15min before doing stretching, even though it is now known that stretching is best done cold, not warmed up. She also had me doing traverse hip adduction/abduction on a machine, which is known to cause piriformis problems, and this is a physiotherapist/specialist who's supposed to help people recover from injuries. When it comes to training matters, doctors/specialists usually don't know too much unless they are competitive athletes themselves.
