4th May, Singapore: Singapore Bowling is tapping on home-grown talent to coach the National Team. It has officially named Mervyn Foo, William Woo and Henry Tan as the new panel of National Head Coaches.
“Each coach has different specialties. Mervyn is a good communicator, William is a sound tactician and Henry is a good technical coach,” said President Jessie Phua.
The coaches will work together as a team and base decisions on a collective agreement. “It is like having one animal with one heart and six hands,” said Henry.
Henry, who has just returned to join the team, boasts an extensive coaching experience in the region. He has worked with Indonesia and Singapore, and was even awarded the prestigious title of Coach of the Year in 1983.

In addition, HenryÂ’s impressive performance on the lanes has bagged him the award of Sportsman of the Year in 1970 and 1975. His sporting legacy has also inducted him into the Singapore Hall of Fame.
William, a former National Bowler, has coached the National Team for several years. His efforts have seen bowlers returning successfully with 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze in SEA Games 1997, and 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze in SEA Games 1995.
Mervyn, a former National Bowler, is the only bowler till date who has been awarded the prestigious scholarship by the Singapore Sports Council to pursue his education in Wichita State University. His blazing performance on the lanes also earned him the Meritorious Award in 1997, Straits Times Coca Cola Sports Award in 1997 and the Sports Distinguished Person Award in 1994/1995.
