Diploma in Sports & Exercise Sciences
About the Programme
This new Diploma in Sports & Exercise Sciences (DSES) aims to support the growing needs of the sports and wellness industry. It equips students with specialised knowledge and relevant skills, enabling them to help people keen to achieve overall wellness and athletes striving for peak performance. With a problem-based learning paradigm, the course adopts a multi-disciplinary approach in addressing the differing challenges and issues in sporting scenarios. Students will gain an appreciation of how organised sports today is increasingly dependent on well-run administration, management and sports science functions.
There are two specializations for this diploma. They are
1. Sports Performance
2. Exercise & Fitness
Sports Performance
The Sports Performance specialisation option will support the sports development (Sports for Life) and Sports Excellence industries. This track explores the sports sciences with biomechanics, nutrition and psychology subject areas.
Exercise & Fitness
The Exercise & Fitness specialisation option will prepare graduates for the Sports for Life, health promotion, wellness and fitness industries. This track delves deeper into fitness & health and exercise prescription & programming.
Programme Aims
The DSES aims to support the needs of the growing sports and fitness/health industries. It seeks to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach in the study of various sports and exercise science areas. Students will be equipped with specialised knowledge and skills relevant to sports performance and exercise/fitness settings.
Future Career
DSES graduates will be able to pursue supervisory or account managing portfolios in the sports and wellness industry,
Graduates of the DSES Sports Performance Specialisation may find jobs in the following types of companies and organisations: Singapore Sports Council, National Sports Associations, golf & country clubs/resorts, sports & recreation clubs, fitness centres/gyms, schools & institutions, private sports coaching schools, sports service providers (outsourced partners with SSC and schools), and so on.
Graduates of the DSES Exercise & Fitness Specialisation may find jobs in the following types of companies and organisations: fitness clubs/gyms, health & wellness centres, HR departments in organisations (especially in workplace health promotion), golf & country clubs/resorts, sports retail shops (such as nutrition stores, apparel stores), fitness equipment & supplies companies, fitness & health promotion service providers, hospitals & physical rehabilitation centres, child development centres (motor/physical development), and so on.
Graduates may also choose to pursue further education and to this end, all our diploma programmes are designed to meet the requirements for advanced standing in local and overseas Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs).
The DSES curriculum is designed to prepare students for national professional certification examinations. Specifically, the Sports Performance Specialisation is aligned with the SSC National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP), while the Exercise & Fitness Specialisation is aligned with the SSC Fitness InstructorÂ’s Certification (FIC). This is to ensure that graduates of the DSES are industry-relevant and professionally ready when they complete the respective courses.
Outstanding graduates will be able to pursue a university education in sports studies locally or overseas at institutions such as Physical Education & Sports Science Academic Group (National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University), Loughborough University, and University of South Australia.
