Disciplining the students?

Parents push the responsible of moulding their children to the school. If the school takes a more drastic measures to teach the student, parents complain. Either way, the parents not happy. I think parents are also responsible for the kids learning.
My question is: To what extent should the school discipline the students?

cannot beat, humiliate or verbally abuse the students.
even ask them to wash toilet must have good reasons like they vandalise the toilet cannot be for latecoming -

1. Discipline is good for kids and kids actually WANT to be disciplined cos most are at the age where they are testing their boundaries and discipline is the process of marking out where their boundaries should be when they gently push against it. It's a guideline for them during the time of growing up which can act as safety net as they try to gain independence.
2. Discipline doesn't have to be physical, cruel, or abusive. It does, however, have to be firm, consistent and fair.
3. Parents often fail to see the impact they can have on their child's life. I have seen it demonstrated so often it is like a moot point that EVERYONE knows, but a lot of parents simply don't do it at the cost of the kids' future. I think it has to do with the lack of time they can spend with their kids, thus they don't want to be seen as the 'bad guy'.
One father even begged me to please be fierce and cane his kid if I need to cos "u know la, we face each other at home. If I cane him, I see him crying and he hates me I also dont know what to do. You don't need to go through that so please be strict with him"
Sigh I hope by the time I have kids... I won't make the same mistake

It is becoming more and more challenging to discipline children nowadays. The quota for underaged smokers has increased dastically and schools are not able to effectively educate their students to refrain from smoking etc. It'll be very disappointing to see our future leaders ruining themselves at such younG age.
