Dont know why but maybe some ppl jump at the word Christmas or X-mas? I have a friend who never sent out Christmas cards but sends out other greeting cards like CNY. So is something happening in US already? Signs of the rapture coming soon or end is near or Antichrist coming or just a hoo ha?Originally posted by HENG@:seasonal holidays like christmas usually help retail chains boost their sales volumes! why would they wanna 'ban' X-mas???
Religious pressure grps? Dont understand. W/c religion? Why would Christians & Catholics want Walmart to 'ban' Christmas? Is S'pore really going to impose a nationwide 'ban' on the word Christmas bcos of RHA, anti sedition law etc? God help us if really comes to this. May all the Christians & Catholics be able to bear the persecution.Originally posted by Chin Eng:My take?
US is full of pressure groups (not necessarily religious in the core but looks religous on the outside). Such groups serve a certain interest, and because of their fifth amendment, has the leeway to expand or twist issues out of hand.
After reading the article, it is no different from any Singapore malls, where Merry Christmas may be replaced by Happy Holidays.
Had Walmart explicitly not sell any Christmas products, then there may be a cause for concern. It being a profit making business, it would be extremely stupid not to jump in the bandwagon of trying to sell as much as posisble.
The US culture is, in reality, extremely myopic in their outlook. Many of those living in the inner cities have not even left their city or even their home state. While their information dissemination is extremely rapid, the people they report on may not be well-informed. I have been with friends there and met their friends, these people may even have the impression that Singapore is part of Samoa or China. A store-clerk has not even see the computer chip on my credit card before, and stared a long time at it.
I guess my response on such articles are:
What is the background of the article?
Who is involved?
Who benefits for the trend of events in the article?
How relevant is the title of the article to the actual event itself?
Dun understand. I don't see anything wrong with celebrating Christmas.Originally posted by John The Baptist:Dont know why but maybe some ppl jump at the word Christmas or X-mas? Let me make one correction, it is the politically correct pressure groups that seek to ban conspiciuous displays of religion for fear that they inflame the sensitivities of other religions and they use the Constitution to back them up.Originally posted by Chin Eng:My take?

Those who react like this are just a bunch of myopic losers.Originally posted by John The Baptist:Dont know why but maybe some ppl jump at the word Christmas or X-mas? Exactly, why would Walmart ban Christmas, the title in itself is wrong but I guess the intention is draw the emotions of the readers. From what I read in the article, Walmart, in the interest of other shoppers, had (rightly or wrongly) not used Merry Christmas, that's all.
Bcos very funny to me. Christmas dont sell Christmas prdts, then sell what? Bras & panties?
Aiyoh, why like that? I DID NOT say Singaporeans are not myopic. I said US folks are myopic. Why you like to link things that not even part of the discussion. I am talking specifically about the US culture. I will comment on the Singapore culture if the topic is appropriate... like you said, don't drift lah. I am attempting to show that what we see on TV about US does not represent their inner culture.
S'poreans not myopic meh? Have u ever heard man in the street claim S'poreans like toad in the well looking up at the sky thru the small hole on top? Then he exclaims, ya that's the whole sky!
Depends lah... there's an article in Yahoo today about Pat Robertson raising a stinker 'cos schools board voted to go with "Intelligent Design" to replace Evolution (or something like that - I've lost link)Originally posted by LazerLordz:Let me make one correction, it is the politically correct pressure groups that seek to ban conspiciuous displays of religion for fear that they inflame the sensitivities of other religions and they use the Constitution to back them up.
Personally, its a whole load of bull. It's like giving up your heritage because you feel some newcomers might not like what you do.
Alamak. Sorry for the nobrainer question.Originally posted by Chin Eng:Aiyah! Scratch head, let me try again.
US is full of lobbyist/pressure groups with lots of personal agenda, be it religious, racial etc. At the drop of hat, they will rise up and make mountains out of molehills.
Huh, who say Christians/Catholics want Walmart to ban Christmas?
According to your link, one group of Catholic buay song that Walmart did not put "Merry Christmas" but "Happy Holiday" or something like that.

Pat Robertson is the reason there is the phenomenon of "Christian Taliban" in Middle America today.Originally posted by Chin Eng:Depends lah... there's an article in Yahoo today about Pat Robertson raising a stinker 'cos schools board voted to go with "Intelligent Design" to replace Evolution (or something like that - I've lost link)
My point is, pressure groups are aplenty in the US. Some of these goups have congressman on their side to push their personal interest (politically correct or not).
I couldn't agree with you more.....Originally posted by LazerLordz:Pat Robertson is the reason there is the phenomenon of "Christian Taliban" in Middle America today.
That man is deluded and dangerous.Period.
I can bet Osama seems like an ant compared to him.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Pat Robertson is the reason there is the phenomenon of "Christian Taliban" in Middle America today.

I'd prefer to let them slug it out four way with Zawahiri and Zarqawi being the water carriers in the ring.Originally posted by iveco:I can bet Osama seems like an ant compared to him.
As I had written previously, some people like to make mountains out of molehills.Originally posted by John The Baptist:Walmart boycott ends with apology. Catholic League says retail giant has satisfied Christmas demands. The link below:
