If you're feeling awed by art that you don't understand or dislike, don't. As in my previous post, there's no need for justification for what one likes or dislikes, understands or not.
Art appreciation is personal and entirely individualistic. yes, we can have all the arty-farty infrastructure, tons of arty-farty ppl but eventually it's the mindset of our ppl and the attitude towards this industry tt needs to be polished
and of cos.....bery subjective.....some like it, some don't, some don't mind.....
one thing sad to mention....
got once i happily book tix for a performance at assplanade....
it's a relli rare performance....a china troupe i had watched them once at a private closed-door event....and i mus applaud the quality....
on the day of the event, i went to assplanade to find out tt the tix are under-subscribed and the whole performance was cancelled....
in other countries, tix for their shows sell out real fast...
i wonder how many performances scheduled to be in singapore has been axed due to poor ticket sales.....
I actually really pity them having to live in a country like ours.
The Chinese troupe you mentioned...well it just proof my point futher. The arts going public here are selective about what the go see. Do you think a 'famous' show from broadway will have the same problem of not selling the tickets. I doubt it. Mention the name broadway...and people will rush to be seen entering the theather. -
And thats my problem with the arts scene in Singapore. Most of them thinks rock music is not an art. Take Electric Guit is trash, is a angry youth. Take violin is classy and art. I have not being to a performance (the plays and ballet and dances kind)Â…who knows I may even like it.
What I am trying to bring up in this topic isÂ…Are people really appreciating art for the right reasons? Because I suspect there are people who goes to these arts performance just because it is fashionable. Just like F| had pointed out in one of her post - "those people that go there and end up groaning or sleeping bcos they are forced to be there". Forcing themselves to love the arts just because all 'high society' people love arts too. -
