The 20-year-old, who has played 11 times for Alkmaar and been capped twice, visited London on Wednesday to negotiate personal terms with the English Premier League club.
If Vlaar decides to join the club managed by Dutchman Martin Jol he would move when the transfer window opens in January.
Alkmaar, who reached the Dutch Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over NEC Nijmegen, wanted 3.5 million euros ($4.16 million) but will receive a fee nearer 2.5 million. -

i feel that martin jol is not as good a manager as many said he is.
he has no idea at all. with the team failing to score little no nothing was done in terms of tactical change.
spurs should consider selling defoe. though he is a fantastic striker his style does not suit spurs at all. with mido away at the african nations cup spurs attack ran out of steam.
with their long ball tactics (which i find boring and stupid) they need players with height up front. without mido they have to play keane and defoe. -

Spurs swoop at the death to sign Murphy
Tottenham tonight signed Danny Murphy from Charlton just before the transfer deadline.
Murphy was left out of the Addicks' squad for the home clash with West Brom as he discussed moving across London.
The 28-year-old spent 18 months at The Valley after joining from Liverpool, where he spent seven years following his move from his first club Crewe Alexandra in 1997.
'Danny is an experienced player who is used to playing at the highest level. He has a fantastic ability to create chances and we are delighted that we have been able to bring him to the Club,' said Spurs' sporting director Damien Comolli.
Murphy added on the club's website: 'Spurs has always been a club that has attracted me, but whereas previously things didn't work out, this time they have and I am absolutely delighted.
'I am looking forward to playing my part in the team Martin Jol is building.' -
