But Kevin Keegan has a knack for ressurecting clubs that have been relegated. He brought Fulham from Division III to Division I in the three years following Mohammed Al-Fayed's takeover. Manchester City's swift return to the top flight in 2002 was also largely his work. Also if you remember, Newcastle were promoted within one season of hiring Keegan as the head coach.
If I had the wealth of Roman Abramovic, I'd buy Sheffield Wednesday and hire Keegan as coach. Rapid promotion will be guaranteed.

Newcastle United kept their hopes of winning a UEFA Cup place alive after a battling 2-1 defeat against Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor Stadium.
Graeme SounessÂ’ side were beaten by goals in each half from Ruben Castro and Jorge Andrade but a stunning volley from Lee Bowyer limited the damage.
Deportivo provided a stern test for the injury-hit Magpies but despite their extra class and a number of chances, they were unable to put the tie beyond reach.
With an away goal to their name, Newcastle – who had been missing the likes of Scott Parker, Emre, Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer, Shola Ameobi and Titus Bramble – still have a chance of an upset.
Newcastle were determined not to be intimidated and made their presence felt with some fierce challenges early on.
Stephen Carr and Nicky Butt – who recovered from a stomach bug to take his place in the side – both went in strongly for 50-50 balls. James Milner also felt the full force of a challenge from Aldo Duscher and later required stitches for a cut near the eye.
But Deportivo soon began to assert themselves and looked the more composed team throughout the first half.
Their first chance came after just two minutes when the dangerous Pedro Munitis broke clear down the right and pulled the ball back towards goal but Jean-Alain Boumsong cleared.
Newcastle failed to heed the warning and Munitis exposed their weakness down the same flank to create the opening goal eight minutes later.
Steven Taylor was caught flat-footed as Munitis broke into the box and squared for Ruben to sidefoot home from six yards.
For a short spell it looked as if the Magpies might fold under the pressure as Ruben scuffed another shot in front of goal and Munitis fired straight at Shay Given.
Newcastle showed more composure as the half wore on but they were unable to convert their increased possession into opportunities.
They were almost caught out again just before the interval as the ubiquitous Munitis found space outside the area and sent another shot narrowly wide.
Newcastle finally started to show some attacking intent as the second half began and were instantly rewarded as they won a corner and claimed a superb 48th-minute equaliser through Bowyer.
Stephen CarrÂ’s cross was cleared only as far as the edge of the area by Deportivo and the ball fell perfectly for Bowyer, who connected with a sweet left-foot volley that flew into the top corner.
The game became scrappy after that with referee Serge Gumienny frequently blowing for free-kicks but, stirred back into life by the equaliser, Deportivo lifted their game.
Newcastle were back on level terms for just 10 minutes as Andrade ran unchallenged into the box from the halfway line and curled a superb finish past Given.
The visitors then appeared to be hanging on as Ruben volleyed just wide with an acrobatic effort and Given needed to be alert to keep out a deflected Munitis cross.
The Newcastle wall then did its job as the Spaniards won two free-kicks outside the area but failed to test Given.
Munitis again caused a few flutters in the box as the clock ran down but, despite riding their luck on occasions, Newcastle held on for a result their determination deserved. -
Soccer: Moore completes Newcastle move
They should try to lure Michael Owen to St James Park if possible.
NEWCASTLE, England : Australian skipper Craig Moore has completed his move to Newcastle on a two-year contract, the English Premiership club announced.
The 29-year-old defender was a free agent after leaving Borussia Monchengladbach after previous spells at Rangers and Crystal Palace.
The player's agent, John Viola, confirmed that the deal would keep Moore at St James' Park until the summer of 2007.
"He's delighted with the move," said Viola.
Moore has passed a medical and will renew his defensive partnership with former Rangers team-mate Jean-Alain Boumsong at Newcastle.
Moore spent 11 seasons at Ibrox, split by a six-month spell with Palace, and joined Monchengladbach in January.
He inherits the number 18 shirt formerly worn by Aaron Hughes, who joined Aston Villa this summer, and although he has been signed too late to play in the Intertoto Cup, should Newcastle turn around a 2-1 deficit and oust Deportivo La Coruna, before winning their final, Moore would be able to play from the first round of the UEFA Cup onwards.
He follows Scott Parker, Emre and Tim Krul into St James' Park this summer, with Newcastle still keen to add at least one striker before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness admits Michael Owen is 'the type of player we need to be attracting to this club'.
Souness wants to bring four more players to St JamesÂ’ Park ahead of the new Barclays Premiership season with a striker being one of his top priorities.
With former Liverpool star Owen currently the subject of speculation over his future at Real Madrid, he would appear to fit the bill perfectly with Nicolas Anelka and Mark Viduka also in SounessÂ’ thoughts.
Souness has already made attempts to sign Anelka from Fenerbahce – as well as Fulham’s Luis Boa Borte – but he has insisted he is not planning a swap deal involving Nicky Butt to sign Viduka from Middlesbrough.
Souness said: “Mark Viduka, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen are all top strikers and the facts speak for themselves.
“They are all 20-goals-a-season strikers and they are the types of players we need to be attracting to this club.
“We are obviously in need of firepower and if we were to get that type of player in we would have a very good squad.
“We need four more new players and ideally we would have had them in by now, but certainly we need to do it sooner rather than later.”
Souness dismissed suggestions that he was ready to offload Butt in favour of Viduka, adding: “Mark is a player I much admire but I have never spoken to Steve McClaren about him.”
Meanwhile, Lee Clark has rejoined the Magpies after being given a month-long contract by his former club.
The 32-year-old midfielder has been training with Newcastle after being released by Fulham at the end of last season.
Clark has been brought in to help out reserve team coach Tommy Craig with younger players in the second string, but he will be able to turn out for the first team at St JamesÂ’ Park should the need arise.
He told the club’s website, www.nufc.co.uk: “When I was released by Fulham at the end of last season, never in my wildest dreams did think I'd end up back here.
“It’s important to stress that I'm here to help out Tommy Craig with the younger lads in the reserves.
“That is something that interests me because I am keen to get into coaching. I've got my UEFA ‘B’ licence, and I'm half way through my ‘A’ licence.
“But I'm registered as a player, and who knows what may happen if there are injuries of suspensions.”
He added: “I played in the top flight last season, I'm 33 in October and I still feel I have a couple of years left in me. I'll certainly be ready if the opportunity comes along to step into the first team.
“I've signed a short-term deal initially, but hopefully I'll be able to extend that.”
Clark made 195 appearances for his hometown club before a transfer to local rivals Sunderland in 1997. -

Alan Shearer would love to be paired again with former England colleague Michael Owen in Newcastle United's attack, but fears that will be tough to achieve.
The Magpies have admitted their interest in Owen but Shearer believes there will still be plenty of offers made for the Real Madrid striker.
Shearer said: “Michael Owen would be an improvement to any club in this league, and that includes Newcastle. I would enjoy playing alongside him again.
“I have made no secret of the fact that I think he is a top, top player and his record suggests that.
“Anyone who wants to score goals should look no further than Michael Owen. Our manager would love him and he would be a great asset but I feel Michael will have a few options.
“I had great times with him for England and he can score goals in any league in the world. He has done it in the Premier League and La Liga, but there will be a few after his signature despite one or two denials.”
And Shearer believes that the long list of clubs denying an interest is just a smoke screen.
Shearer, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek programme, said: “Everyone knows what football is like. People are not prepared to say they are after him.
“He says he’s talked to three or four clubs and they could be the three or four who can win the title, who knows?”
On Newcastle’s targets for the season, Shearer added: “We have got to get into the top six. There’s no European football, which is disappointing, but if we are honest that could work in our favour. Last season we did not have the squad to play so many games and get through them.
“Playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday was tough. We have to finish higher than we did because last season wasn’t good enough for a club of this size.
“Everyone knows we will need more additions, six or so went out in the summer and we have only had three arrive which doesn’t add up.” -

'Owen open to Toon move'

Michael Owen has not ruled out a move to Newcastle despite their lack of European football, according to reports.
The Sun says that the England striker is keeping an open mind about the north-east club as he looks for a way out of Real Madrid, where he is facing a season as fifth-choice striker.
He would link up with his former international teammate Alan Shearer and would be guaranteed a first-team place.
Owen's first and second choices were thought to be Manchester United and Liverpool, but a move to either looks unlikely.
Newcastle are the only club willing to meet Real's £11m asking price, and it looks like Owen could take a year out of Europe to get regular football.

Kieron Dyer has signed a new four-year contract with Newcastle United.
The England midfielder has completed an impressive turn-around in his fortunes on Tyneside after his Newcastle career looked as though it could be over nearly a year ago.
Dyer, 26, confirmed last weekend he had agreed a new deal with the Magpies after winning over the St JamesÂ’ Park crowd last season.
He told www.stellargroup.co.uk: “The club wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay. It didn't take long for my agent and the club to agree everything.
“I am delighted it has all been sorted out so quickly.
“This is a really important season for the club and for me personally. We have to improve on our showing last year and I'm sure we will.
“There is an excellent spirit here and we are all looking forward to the start of the Premiership.
“I hope to stay fit and play in as many games as I can and hopefully there will be a place at the World Cup waiting for me at the end of the season.” -
