Bollywood star rapped for catwalk unbuttoning act
MUMBAI, April 5, 2009 (AFP) - Indian police have registered a case accusing Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and his wife of obscenity after she unbuttoned his jeans during a fashion show.
Mumbai police said they acted after a complaint was lodged against Kumar and Twinkle Khanna by a social campaigner who called the performance "vulgar and indecent."
Kumar, a brand ambassador for Levi's "Unbuttoned" range, was strutting down the catwalk last week when he stopped in front of his wife, who was seated in the audience, and asked her to undo his trousers.
"We have registered a case against Akshay, Twinkle and the organisers of Lakme Fashion Week," an unnamed police officer told the Press Trust of India news agency late Saturday.
India's obscenity laws are punishable by a maximum of two years' imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 rupees (39 dollars).
The actor has apologised for the incident.
Celebrities have previously landed in hot water over behaviour deemed to be offensive in culturally conservative India.
In 2007 a court issued arrest warrants for actress Shilpa Shetty and Hollywood star Richard Gere after he hugged and kissed her at an AIDS awareness event, but the case was eventually thrown out.
Yea... so embarrassing...
Its hard being a star, a bollywood one at that.
i wonder why are they still so backward.. western civilization doesn't find it offending, so perhaps india should try to advance themselves in terms of their open-mindedness..

Bollywood star arrested over 'obscenity'
Bollywood action hero Akshay Kumar was arrested Monday 18 May on suspicion of obscene behaviour during a recent fashion show in Mumbai, police said.
A complaint had been lodged against Kumar and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, after she was photographed unbuttoning a pair of jeans that the actor was modelling on the catwalk at the Lakme Fashion Week in March.
"I can confirm that Akshay Kumar came to Vakola police station (in Mumbai) at 8:30 am with his lawyer and surrendered himself," assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahdadi told AFP.
"He was arrested under section 294 of Indian Penal Code and was given bail."
Khanna was arrested and bailed last month.
Kumar, 41, has said he did not mean to cause any offence by his actions and apologised.
The arrest came as he returned to India after filming abroad.
"The news blew up when I was away," he joked in an interview with the Hindustan Times newspaper published Monday 18 May.
"I just want to make it home from the airport without my car being egged by all those who have never been unbuttoned by their wives."
Kumar was recently seen in the first Hindi-language film to be shot on location in China, "Chandni Chowk to China," which was poorly received by audiences and critics.
