wrong meh? by our education system thats the case mah afterall its competition among the pple so all do badly means the same as all do well.Originally posted by the Bear:i was pondering over some things recently...
have we fallen so far that results are the be-all and end-all of everything?
i look at the sociopath's declaration that "everyone fails = everyone gets good results" and almost weep at the cynicism shown by people these days..
i look at the schools and i was sickened so much my heart physically missed a beat or something... where the schools were not so much interested in their sacred duty of educating the children but they were in hot pursuit of more awards to win.. children be damned...
i look at the forums in sgforums and i see people deriding others for knowledge and taking pride in their own ignorance... and am very much saddened..
everyone says "society is like that" and descend to the lower common denominator of the muck, wallowing in it, professing "bo pian" and "what to do? society is like that"
is it just a cop out?
being human.. we can define our humanity as being conscious of the choices we make.. we can make a change in our little spheres of influence.. and that expands to make changes in greater areas.. and in time, the society itself..
it is not easy but it can be done...
or are we too lazy, too cynical, too selfish to even contemplate and think for the next generation, our children, our children's children to change our stupid and insane ways? they are not worth it?
it is something i think about, and it is very worrying...
cynicism.. is the abandonment of hope.. and without hope, we lose our humanity

it is cos of the harsh society we are living in...like if you want to get a job, companies wun accept if you dun have the required qualifications. So that's what drove most people to think that getting a result is more important than anything else in the worldOriginally posted by the Bear:maybe i'm unable to communicate well enough or was too subtle..
or are people so fixed on getting a result that nothing else matters?
Machiavellian philosophies have taken root here? i guess we are no better than the PRC people we rail against...
alas...
certs was a good idea until pple decided that it was more important than the knowledge it is suppose to indicate the pple have.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:I would say it's kind of true.
Just looking in my field only, getting this certification, getting that certification shows that you are competent in this particular area. No cert = no good.
And it's being incorporated into books. This cert will lead you to career advancement, or is a must by companies, bla bla bla...
Although these books authors acknowledge that there are pros out there who know more than them even without these certs... they still say it's better to have a cert.
Something like if a crime happens, the evidence must be somewhere to prove that criminal guilty.
Like I say, people use it like that are proving whether someone is guilty or innocent of a crime.Originally posted by hisoka:certs was a good idea until pple decided that it was more important than the knowledge it is suppose to indicate the pple have.![]()

Just because everyone doesn't do it, doesn't mean it's wrong.Originally posted by the Bear:someone once said "just because everyone does it, doesn't make it right"
I wish to... but hor... I don't think my skills are good enough for those positions.Originally posted by BadzMaro:mm..

Not only so, you've gotta be clean. Even if you are willing to change, but your records aren't... too bad.Originally posted by the Bear:i'd do that in a flash but i'm not the one hiring.. and those hiring want paper qualifications.. competence doesn't matter as long as the paper is there
But IT is also one of the first to go... when something goes up, something must go down.Originally posted by BadzMaro:its all abuot the paper now..

getting F's in a few modules might help in bring the cap down below 2nd upperOriginally posted by fudgester:Yeah I know... it wasn't too long ago when I was still hellbent on getting good results...
But now I've become far more accepting of my circumstances. Whatever will be, will be. As long as I work hard and do my best, then I'll just accept whatever results come my way.
Of course, it would be sucky for my point average to drop further. But I suppose point averages aren't the be-all and end-all of getting an education. After all, I certainly am not going to drop below second class (lower) unless if I do something fantastic like setting the engineering workshop on fire....
Which is why I've resolved to be more active in both my CCA (NUS Literary Society) and voluntary work (Singapore Red Cross).![]()
