And why must the alcohol be cold? I thought DNA only starts to denature at 80 deg. -

If you all did it by some the kiwi method (that is subject it to detergent and rubbish), then cooling is needed.
That's because of enzymes. The DNA is shielded from the enzymes with a nuclear membrane. When you use detergent, it destroys this shield.
The cooling down will slow down the enzyme activity and thus prevent the DNA from being destroyed by the enzymes. -

i think the alcohol is cold to further reduce the engergetics sort of like the opposite of you heating things to make them dissolve
better check with starblue, its been awhile sincei play with such stuff. she doing DNA for your urops she should know bah -

And I've found out that the addition of alcohol create an electrical imbalance (since it's non-polar) that has to be corrected by the precipitation of DNA into the alcohol.....
.... but I still can't seem to find out why the alcohol MUST be cold.
And yeah, I'm taking General Bio this semester. -

just that the solution is now less polar, meaning the DNA molecules find it energetically more favourable to precipitate. in chem the chemicals always prefer to be in a lower engery state.
the cooling is to lower the energy -
Anyway, in the worst case scenario, I'll just take mayi's answer that the lower temperature helps to retard the action of the DNase enzyme which would otherwise break the DNA into pieces.
