This scene also highlights a result of the educational system here. People just stand there and let themselves get scolded, whether they deserve it or not. Singapore education relies a lot on impressing the authority of elders and teachers, and phrases like "When you get shouted at, just bow your head and listen! Don't talk back!" are nothing special here. Hence the image of subservience and compliance gets burnt into students from a very young age.

I think maybe it is because not all society has accepted the idea of homosexuality yet. I know in some countries overseas, it is now slowly become a norm, but maybe in Asia, most people are still reluctant to accept that idea. So that explains why most people feel awkward when they see gay couples behaving intimately, even when what they share is no different than a normal couple...
