This pathway depends on the amount of glucose in your body. Basically, what starblue said is correct. Upon consumation of a meal, the level of glucose in your body should RISE which shifts the reaction TOWARDS glycogen. Therefore, you should have Glycogen <---- Glucose.
However, after your body (mainly your brain) uses up glucose for aerobic metabolism, you need glucose as an energy source. Thus, it now becomes Glycogen ---> Glucose.
Note that this process is a CONVERSION. Not synthesis.....

yes i do know tt its a conversion process of glucose to glycogen n glycogen to glucose regulated by the diff in ratio of insulin n glucagon concentration but in times of starvation, when glucose and glycogen levels r LOW the body then turn on gluconeogenesis using other sources such as protein fr muslce to make glucose.
note tt wat im driving at is tt gluconeogenesis does happens in animal too (which starblue said tt only plants do such a thing) -
