While playing DOTA, my friend and myself have tried to advance to the enemy base via the middle lane. Why the middle lane? The middle lane, primarily because it offers the shortest distance to the enemy fortress.
However, I noted the following problems:
1. In a game with 4 or more players on both sides, 2 enemy heroes will more down from the middle lane.
2. The spirit tower is located in such a way that it is not intuitive for the allied creeps to attack it; they have a tendency to chase the enemy hero/es and bypass the spirit tower.
3. The spacing of the spirit towers are such that there is not reaction time to amass the allied creep forces.
I shall further elaborate on point 3. With some effort in Operational Research, one will realize that if one focuses on a particular corridor to a certain depth, one will be able to amass a few waves of creeps, to the point that the creeps will have a certain momentum. This mass of creeps will be able to destroy the enemy's single creep wave and then reach all the way to the final spirit tower. This strategy can be effective only if the first two spirit towers are being destroyed.
However, if you consider the placement of the spirit towers, the southern corridor is such that the spirit towers are deliberately placed further away from the allied's point of view. As such, there is a higher chance to allow the creep wave to flow through. This allows a better build up of allied creeps, and hence with time gives a better chance to push through the final spirit tower and then one can start working on MEGA Creeps.
