NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Singapore's next general election could be held as early as the first week of May, Kyodo News reported, citing top government officials and local media reports.
Although Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has until the middle of next year to call a general election, he has apparently decided to go for early polls to ride on the back of a strong economy, which grew 6.4% last year, the news agency said.
Word on the grapevine is that Lee, who is the son of Singapore's elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew, will call for dissolution of parliament around April 22 to pave the way for a general election on May 6, Kyodo said.
General elections are seen as a non-event in Singapore, where the ruling party has won every election since independence in 1965 and now controls all but two constituencies, the news agency said.
