Replies to any questions asked about the courseHow frequent do you meet per week?Basically, it is about 2 sessions per week during the course.
1 session during weekday which will be theory/training session.
1 session during weekend (usually sunday) which will be more hands-on.
What are some of the topics you will cover?Topics include introduction to campcraft, ropework, outdoor cooking (setting of fire etc), navigation (mapreading/compass), abseiling. Participants will go trekking in Singapore and Malaysia together before planning an outdoor expedition of their own to a mountain in Malaysia.
I have no experience in adventure/camping blah? Can I still join? The course is suitable for people who have no experience in adventure/camping/trekking before. It is an opportunity to meet people with similar interest, train together, and you don't have to feel pressurised that you are a novice/not fit enough/don't know what to do because everyone learns together.
Why is the course so long? The course is long because a lot of those who join have no prior experience.
For example, in the previous 12th B.O.A.T training, we have a mother with a 10 year old daughter who joined. She came for the first session pulling those 'air stewardess' luggage. At the end of the course, she was with her 14 kg backpack and went up to Mt Ophir with the rest of the participants - no problems.
What types of people usually join this course? The people who have participated in BOAT comes from different age groups, walks of life - our youngest participant in the previous BOAT was 15, oldest was 50.
Of course, if you are already experienced, you can still join. There is always something new to learn each time.
