As economy is based on population growth, many leaders just cannot come to term how to balance it. As always economy and ecology move in opposite direction. Money vs environment.

short term "economic gains" which will cause the destruction of the planet should be seen for what they are...
a phasing out of bad technology to sustainable technology must be done.. even if it is painful now, it'll be more painful or even fatal later...
to have the balls to not bow down to corporate pressure groups or lobbyists.. or in the US, to outlaw lobbyists outright...
thing is, all know what the right thing to do is, but no gabrament has the balls to implement it... even when the people want it...
I wouldn't be so sure that the problems lies solely with governments really.
I mean, look at all the grips about the PAP. Most of them don't really want better governance, they just want to be able to consume more while at the same time paying less for it. They want the money to buy cars, and for it to be cheap driving it. They would vote in the Devil himself as long as such promises are given.
Most of the small minority who claim they want it i reckon, do not really understand the amount of sacrifice that would be required.
Before wealth is determined by inheriting from our ancestors, now we take pride in accumulating wealth by borrowing from our unborn children.

More like quickening the end process.

Way i looked at it, it has already spent the future. There just isn't any way for them to plug up their deficit without drastically cutting their spending, starting with their 500 billion dollars army.
I don't know who the hell's in charge in America, it's certainly not the people.
I feel the problem will last for as long we are around.
We have to be realistic, the population is ever increasing and it will just be more difficult to eliminate the problems, let alone dealing with new challenges along the way.
