yup it is the ends of used incense sticks. i just need something to prop up the stems so that the leaves can face the sunlight.Originally posted by Hocklez:huiz, what stick are u using? look like used incense to me. =p
i am not sure if it is dwarf sunflower or not cause they din state, hope is those big stalks one... =D
i am still at trial and error state, haven grown a sunflower before. hope it will grow up fine at my 1st attempt...
mine don have dwarf, confirm cause i wun like a sunflower so small, u don't think it looks weird? usually when we think of sunflowers, they are big!Originally posted by huiz:yup it is the ends of used incense sticks. i just need something to prop up the stems so that the leaves can face the sunlight.
i also bought my sunflower seeds from a supermarket. brand is 'Horti' the packet states 'sunflower dwarf' on the front. i dont think it is the big stalk one from the name.
i tried growing my second batch of sunflowers when the first batch died but it didnt last long. quite pathetic...some seeds didnt sprout at all(scarly it is stolen by birds as food ) and those which sprouted, grew abt 4 leaves then died liao. dunno is it bcos once the packet is opened, the seeds will deteriorate in quality or what. i have run out of the sunflower seeds. i still have another packet of chrysanthemum seeds which my mum bought together with the sunflower seeds...think i may try that soon.Originally posted by Hocklez:mine don have dwarf, confirm cause i wun like a sunflower so small, u don't think it looks weird? usually when we think of sunflowers, they are big!
are u intending to grow a new batch? lets grow together then share experience and maybe see whose grown better.
btw, did u add any fertilisers to the soil? maybe i will go down to the those farms one of these days and ask the expert over there.
i still got serious doubt whether sunflower can be grown in singapore, it is native plant in USA. Tho i heard of people seeing big stalks of them growing in singapore, i have yet to encounter one, even in those farms. Maybe I am abit suaku or my eyes really miss them.
don be discourage, you just need an open space outdoor. the person uses the space outside her workplace.Originally posted by huiz:their stems looks more straight and sturdy than mine. for mine, the stems are a bit bent here and there although i have the incense sticks to support it. my pot doesnt have full sunlight so it bends to get the sun. i am living in a hdb flat.. too bad i dont have a garden.
they look healthy to me. For the time being, try not to let them be exposed to strong sun light and heavy winds. At night ,bring them in doors as heavy rains might flood the pots and cause it to drown.Originally posted by Hocklez:It has been promising, now a total of 4 seedlings has shoot out. Maybe i will transplant them into individual pots when it grows bigger.
Will have less update since growth might not be significant for time being.

now is still about 2 weeks old. unlikely to be ready ba. why?Originally posted by poon cho tang:will they be ready by new year's day?
oh ok so it takes longer to flowerOriginally posted by Hocklez:now is still about 2 weeks old. unlikely to be ready ba. why?
You'll need to rotate the pot (towards the sun) if the sprouts starts to bend in one direction. Rotating will help them to grow up....er... straight.Originally posted by Hocklez:All 8 are growing well, each with 4 leaves now. The stem seems to be reacting well to sunlight at different time of day, bend here and there.

Oh, i see some of the roots are exposed. What I'll do at this stage is to top up with some soil (maybe 1cm) and pat down lightly.
