A new star is born. This time in Nuremburg City Zoo.
Nuremberg, Germany, January 8, 2008—A keeper holds a polar bear cub that was born at the Nuremburg City Zoo last month. The female cub was separated from its mother, Vera, this week over fears she might harm it.
Vera began to behave strangely after being disturbed by a cameraman who climbed a fence to film the bears, according to the news agency AFP.
The zoo announced Tuesday that it will begin bottle-feeding the cub.
Officials made the decision after another polar bear at the zoo, Vilma, apparently ate her two newborn cubs.
Newspapers in Germany have hailed the new cub as the future mate of Zoo Berlin's celebrity bear Knut. Knut, who celebrated his first birthday on December 5, was hand-reared by keepers after his mother rejected him.
