A total solar eclipse has enthralled skywatchers as it traversed a narrow corridor across the Earth, passing through Africa, Turkey and Central Asia.

The eclipse began at 0836 GMT on the eastern coast of Brazil as the Sun rose.

African landfall
At 0908 GMT, Africa got its first glimpse of the spectacular event as the eclipse made landfall in Ghana. Crowds filling the streets of the capital Accra cheered and clapped as it passed overhead.

Many countries in Africa, Europe, and much of western and southern Asia were able to observe a partial eclipse of Sun.

Cloudy weather
In the UK, overcast weather made it difficult to view the partial eclipse. England's chief medical officer, Liam Donaldson, warned people against looking directly at the Sun for fear of damaging their eyesight.
